New Router now cant access server - Urgent!

Featured Replies

I have just installed a new router and now for some reason I cannot access my server.

At first I thought it may be due to the new router using dhcp in a different range, old one was 192.168.1.1 new one was 192.168.0.1 so I changed this to match the old one but still now luck.

Tried powering down router and then powering it back up.

I cant access my server at all not through ip nor through name.

The other issue is I cant access my tower to change any setting or anything as when I connect a monitor to it the screen just goes into standby. I dont want to restart the server as if I cant access it the only way to do it is to cut the power and dont want to risk that.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Tom.

If you press a key on the server when the monitor is connected and in standby, does it not wake up?  Mine will also go into standby but a simple keypress fixes that.

Is the server configured to use DHCP or is the IP statically assigned?  If the former, you may be able to get the server to refresh its IP by disconnecting / reconnecting the ethernet cable.  If the latter, are you certain you've configured the new router to hand out addresses in the same ip space / same subnet / same gateway?

You can always get to the server via its IP address... (assuming you know it)

Tom.

did you restart the non cliant PC? or force a release of the IP address and renew? Your pc might be stuck with the old address and be on the wrong nework.

this has happened to me some times.

Thanks for the reply.

Ive tried pressing any keys also the obvious ones like esc enter and f1 but none wake the monitor.

As for the ip I honestly cant remember, I thought it was a static ip, I have tried changing cables and still nothing.

Thats another issue Im assuming its a static ip address but I cant get into the server to find out due to monitor issues.

I'm pretty sure I have reconfigered the new router correctly, only option i found is starting ip of DHCP and ending ip I changed the 0's to 1's.

Ip address of router is 192.168.1.1

Start ip: 192.168.1.2

End ip: 192.168.1.254

Server ip used to be 192.168.1.66, but as stated cant access server to check this.

I have tried restarting pc, also tried accessing from another pc on the network but didn't work.

DHCP has ranges check to see if it was on the old routers range.

Some routers will give you a list of the clients connected, with ip address’s.

Finally you could try pinging every address or getting a program that can do this….. I have seen IT people use this kind of program might take some looking to find, I think they call it a network sniffer or something.

Good luck. :)

My router has an attached devices page. But the only thing that shows up is my pc.

I have my router connected to a switch then my pc and the server connected to the switch.

Its the exact same setup I had with my old router.

Do you still have the old router?

if so could you use it to test if the server responds?

I do have it yes but with different isp now. It should still allow me to connect to servers on my own network though shouldn't it?

I'll give it a try.

Good.

If it works dont forget to make the server static address and this way it cant get lost again.

Have fun. ;)

I got it working, but not really sure how lol.

I edited the gateway of my network connection and it worked, so i then changed it back to make sure it was that that was causing the issue and much to my surprise it still works lol.

It did have a static ip but for some reason it wouldn't work, took screen shot of setting just in case, might hang on to old router for a couple days just to make sure all is well.

Thanks again!

No problem happy it worked.
