This morning while watching a (sd) video from my unraid box, the video got stuck

 

Upon further investigation, I found that i could ping the box but couldn't telnet into it and couldn't bring up the web page

 

Since i run the box headless (and had to get the kids to school) I just power cycled it up

 

 

I didn't see anything in the sys log --it seems to start when the system booted up. Also the password for root (which i set from the shell prompt) was cleared out

 

 

How do i figure out what happened?  How do i keep the root password from disappearing?

Well, you could hook up a monitor and keyboard and enter the commands to save a syslog to the flash drive.  Save that, there's nothing you can do besides power cycle it like you did.  The syslog will be wiped clean on every reboot.

 

I believe the powerdown script also has a built in command that will save the syslog for you before it shuts down.
