Expected Gaming Performance

Hi all,

I have a new threadripper 1950x build here and the plan was to run unraid dockers for security cams, plex media, and nextcloud/owncloud with a few vms including one for gaming (windows 10). I ran LSTOPO and made sure I had my cpu's set correctly to be on the same node with my gpu (gtx 1080) but my performance is about 50% and sometimes less than that of bare metal windows. I used 2 ssd cache drives in raid 0 and was gaming off of those and had my os on them. 

 

So my question is, should I expect more than 50% of bare metal performance for gaming and if so how much of a performance hit should I be expecting?

There are tweaks that are still happening to qemu which is the hypervisor unraid uses. Ram read and write I can get the same as bare metal. L1-L3 cache is within 97% ish. As far as fps in game it varies.. you with a 1950x don't have to worry as much as both of your dies have memory controllers. There is a thread about threadripper you should read. Once I get to my machine I'll post it but it discusses emulating an epyc processor instead of pass through to make the cache right. Qemu4.0(we are seeing if limetech will give us just the patch we need) will bring 16x pci-e patch that fixes a bug where the gpu card gets certain registers set when the vm is booting and cause a few issues like higher latency than expected.

 

Are you running channel mode for ram?

Also I agree with the other guy. Post your xml make sure to code it with xml so we can read it easier.

 

Also saw your playing off the cache drive instead of dedicated pass through drive. That will cause performance problems

@david279  Do you see any other points that can be optimized besides changing passthrough disk to VirtIO?
