February 7, 20197 yr Hey guys, just bought a Seagate Backup Plus 4TB external drive, but you can easily take them out of the enclosure, they are just a normal 2.5" Barracuda inside. They are 15mm thick though, so bear this in mind in case it's too thick for your drive tray. https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01127CY26/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
May 16, 20197 yr I'm looking to replace a full 1TB 2.5" drive with a 4TB one, so will likely take this option of shucking (as it's about £130 to buy a 2.5" 4TB internal drive compared to this £90 option). Are there any problems to using SMR in Unraid aside from speed issues? Like, does it affect the redundancy or rebuilds or something?

May 23, 20197 yr Just thought I'd say here for posterity that I bought the 4TB Seagate Expansion Portable STEA4000400 (found an open box special for £70) and shucked it to reveal a ST4000LM024 SATA drive. Scan sell those drives for £128, so it was quite a saving! After a single-pass pre-clear, it's now in my array and seemingly working well.
June 20, 20233 yr I've just found 4x of these drives lying around. Did you get them working ok performance wise? Blackmagic disk speed test is giving me around 90MB/s read & write but this is going through a rather crappy usb -> sata while I wait for some 3.5->2.5" caddy adapters to arrive so I can test one on the LSI card.

I have two of them in my server and they both perform identically: a peak of ~140MB/s and around 60MB/s at the slower end of the spindle. See below:
