October 1, 201015 yr Hello people, I have a 2TB drive that has already show some errors in the Logs, this drive was precleared before I added to the array and had no problems. Anyway, the drive has about 200gb of data on it right now. Can I remove this drive and replace with a 1TB drive that I have (spare drive) or I can only replace with a 2TB one? Can I copy the data directly from disk3 (failing) to disk1 or disk 2 and then remove the disk from the array, create a new parity and add a new HD ? Thanks in advance for the great help, Ezbox
October 1, 201015 yr You cannot replace ti with a smaller disk and have the system re-construct the contents for you. You can move the contents elsewhere, stop the array un-assign the disk, type initconfig (To set a new disk configuration ... side effect, parity calcs on old configuration are immediately invalidated.) and then when you re-start the array will calculate parity on the new disk configuration, the one without the drive you removed and un-assigned. When the new calculations are complete, you'll have parity protection once more.

October 2, 201015 yr That will not work unless the disk he is going to remove has all zeros written to it, which it won't without jumping through hoops.

You're right, but the link I posted has all the steps, including zeroing the disk. Note that the data on the disk have to be moved to other(s) disk(s) or other machine until this method.
