Should dual parity disks be the same model?

Featured Replies

I'm about to put a bunch of drives into my server. All drives are the same size.

Option A: two matched 5400rpm drives for parity

Option B: two 7200rpm drives for parity, but different manufacturers

Which should I choose for better performance? Thanks!

No obvious advantage to them being matched. Probably more advantage to specific models. There is a docker and support thread for testing drive speeds here:

You don't mention what you will have for data disks. Write speed will depend on the slowest disk involved and parity is always involved in writes to the array. If parity is faster than all of your data disks you might get a slight advantage on those rare occasions that you simultaneously write multiple data disks.
