Machine unresponsive, "ata_phys_link_offline" etc

I built up a second machine last night with left over parts. I have 4 drives connected via a HP SAS expander which is connected to a supermicro aoc-saslp-mv8. I left it running pre-clear but woke to find the machine unresponsive with messages such as "ata_phys_link_offline" and "ata_eh_reset" (photo attached).

 

Can anyone identify where the problem lies?

    SASLP is the most likely culprit, if possible use an LSI based HBA instead.

    I knew that the SASLP caused problems when carrying out parity checks etc but wasn't expecting it to cause the machine to lock up! fingers crossed that this is the problem rather than the expander
