Not sure what to do

Featured Replies

Hello guys and girls

I'm in a bit of a pickle I've had two drives fail on me

One 6tb and the other a 4tb

So I replaced the 6 with a new 10tb and started the rebuilding then noticed I added it to the wrong drive the 4tb so stopped ( I'm sure that's the wrong thing to do but it's done now )

Then started again but made sure it was on the correct slot this time the 6

But my problem now is in the emulated disks slot what was once the 4 it now says 10

So my question is this it now says 10 with only 4tb of data on it once the rebuilding is done on the other drive can I down size this one to a smaller  drive as I have a 6tb I can replace it with

How did you determine the disks were the problem? Bad connections are very much more common than bad disks.

Are you saying it is emulating 2 disks? Do you have dual parity?

Why do you care which disk rebuilds to 10G and which rebuilds to 6G?

Go to Tools - Diagnostics and attach the complete diagnostics zip file to your next post.

OK, I think I understand. You started rebuilding one of the disks, but not the one you wanted to. And that would have been fine if you had let it complete. Then you could have rebuilt the other on the other spare. Not the capacities you had intended, but it really shouldn't matter.

But instead of letting it go ahead and complete the rebuild, which would have been just fine, you really made a mistake and stopped the rebuild and then started rebuild the other disk instead. Have I got that right?

Correct I was hoping to use a spare 5 or 4 Tb to replace the original 4tb

I have dual parity

Those read errors on disk13 are compromising your rebuild. And I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't increasing. Also disk13 has pending sectors which might be the reason for the read errors. I haven't looked at the other disks yet. You never did answer this:

The 4tb drive just stopped working it's dead but the 6tb keeps stopping not sure why
As the drive is over 5 years old I thought it would be best to replace it now anyway

The 6tb is in a usb enclosure doing a preclear at the moment it passed the smart tests on my pc

But disk 13 keeps getting worse why the errors

My original plane was to replace my two 4tb drives

Disk 5 and 13

I did change the sata cable and port on the disk 4 which was the original 6tb

I've also got coming today two new sas cables just to be sure it's not that

I assume this means both original drives can't be used no more, if that's the case best bet it to rebuild both disks despite the errors on disk13, though there will be some (or a lot) of corruption on the rebuilt disks.

I don't have a 10tb drive to replace disk 5 can I use a smaller drive as it's only 4tb being emulated

Let the current rebuild finish. You will have to do a trick to make it let you rebuild the other.

Preclearing that original disk was another mistake.

Do you have backups of any important and irreplaceable files?

Yeah I have backups of some stuff

It's only my Plex media which isn't backup

As it's to much

No, but you move the data from the emulated disk5 to other disk(s) than remove that one form the array for now, but only after the rebuild of disk4 is finished.

Good news is all other disks SMART looks OK. Did you not notice warnings about disk13 on the Dashboard? Do you have Notifications setup?

I wish I come hear in the first place [emoji51]

Ok after the rebuilding is done how do I go about doing what you said

I didn't notice the warnings as it was going to a old email address which I don't use and haven't for some time now

Obviously you will want to fix that. Might have kept you from getting into this situation.

Ok I have a friend who's going to pick me up a extra 10tb from best buy as he's in the states but not back in the UK for another 12 days should

Should I let the emulated drive stay emulated and replace it with the 10tb when I collect it from a friend

Should be fine, but it would be better if you replaced disk13 now, or asap.

Should I replace disk 13 after and keep the other one emulated to the replacement comes

If you have a disk to replace it with, yes, since you have dual parity with disk13 replaced you're still protected if another disk fails, but as it is now, you have one disabled disk and another one failing, so if a different disk fails at best there will be more corruption during the rebuild.
