USB Flash Drive Not Booting - RESOLVED

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have tried a couple of USB flash drives by now and had no luck getting them to boot.

I used Windows Format and then "c:\syslinux.exe -ma l:"

The last stick is Kingston Data Traveller 2GB. I have even tried HP format tool. MY OS is Wins XP.

Any advise? Thanks!

What symptoms are you having?  Did you select the flash drive as the boot device?  What do you see on the screen when you attempt to boot?

Sorry for missing out the details. The Bios setting was correct (using both USB-ZIP and USB-HDD boot device) and works. I have a give away 256MB USB flash drive and I was able to boot and use the unRaid server. I just wanted to use a better flash drive so it is more reliable. I had another unRaid Pro license on a HP flash drive (separate unRaid server). So my first attempt was a HP mini flash drive, but failed to boot. Then I tried Kingston Data Traveler which is also smaller in size.

With the HP mini drive, it keep cycling the boot sequence and never got to the unRaid OS loading option.

With the Kingston drive, it would stop after loading BZIMAGE... and a bunch of messages. One thing recognizable is "Cannot open root device "<Null>" or unknown-block(8,1).

Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:....

All the drives were formatted the same using 1) Windows FAT32, 2) "c:\syslinux.exe -ma l: 3) Copying all the V4.5.6 files to the drive.

I read on the forum someone was trying to use a PNY drive but had to format it differently.

I tried but could not find the right version of fdisk function for Wins XP.

Thanks for helping.

Update: I also tried these instructions for the same Kingston DT 4GB but unsuccessful. Sorry I mentioned 2GB earlier. It is actually 4GB.

Finally got this resolved after many hours of trying all combinations of Bios USB-HDD, USB-FDD, etc.., different physical USB ports, and formatting method with the USB drive.

Here are my final steps for using the Kingston Data Traveler 101 4GB Flash Drive:

1-Reformatted flash drive using Windows. Not using HP formatting tool.

2-Copy all "original" unRaid OS v.4.5.6 files to drive

3-Copy Config folder from original 256MB bootable flash drive (together with unmenu)

4-Format bootable Linux again. "c:\syslinux.exe -ma l:"

5-Set Bios to boot from USB-HDD

I think the fix was at #2 for not using the the unRaid OS files from the working USB flash drive. I was trying to clone the working drive to the new Kingston flash drive. Instead now I use the original downloaded OS files from Lime-Technology but copy the config folder only from the working flash drive.

Lesson learned here is to start from the beginning with all original files.

Everything is working now and it retains the setting I had previously. What a relief and I am learning so much each time I touch this unRaid technology.

Thanks Joe for trying to help.
