February 17, 20197 yr I read through the Unraid server build recommendations and have a few questions. I am looking for recommendations coming from experience. If I understand correctly Unraid will run with good performance on one CPU and 2 GB memory. I am planning on running 3 VMs max at a time. I have 8 cores, 16 threads (2700X), 32 GB memory to share with Unraid and three VMs. One VM will be a Windows 10 gaming VM and I plan to allocate 3 or 4 cores, 6 or 8 threads and 12 GBs of memory to the VM. This leaves 4 cores, 8 threads and 20 GB memory for Unraid and two VMs. The two VMs will be used one for secure online banking as needed (one VM) and the other VM will be used for general usage (web browsing, youtube, Netflix, email, etc.) The banking VM will not be running all of the time. I plan to encrypt this VM to provide another level of security between the host and the guest. Unraid will have 2 SSD cache drives and 4 HDD drives to manage (one parity, three storage). The system will also have an NVME drive and GPU in passthrough mode for the gaming VM. Backups will be to an external USB HDD drive. How many cores and memory would Unraid and KVM need in this configuration. Would 1 core, 2 threads and 4 GB memory be enough or would this constrain Unraid / KVM performance? This would leave 3 cores, 6 threads and 16 GB of memory for the two VMs which I think is fine for a modern day CPU. Help me to understand how much CPU and memory resources are needed by KVM.
