[Support] Linuxserver.io - Unifi-Controller

Recommended Posts

Another thing to keep in mind is that in 45 days Unifi is going to EOL a bunch of their older hardware.  You can continue to use the old hardware but you can't upgrade your controller version.  So people may want to be cognizant of that and purposely stay on older versions of the controller.

What This Means:

The following UniFi Access Point (AP) models will no longer receive new system releases, critical bug fixes, or security updates after March 1, 2021:

UAP-Outdoor

UAP-Outdoor+

UAP-Pro

UAP-IW

UAP (v1+v2)

UAP-LR (v1+v2)

UAP-AC-EDU

UAP-AC-IW-PRO

These UniFi AP models will continue to be supported by network controllers that have not upgraded to versions released past the obsoletion date (March 1, 2021). These AP models will still remain visible in controllers that are upgraded beyond the obsoletion date, but they will no longer be configurable.

SIf you were going from LTS (5.6), to 5.14, there would be some necessary interim steps as outlined earlier in this thread.

I'm on LTS (5.6) and would like to go to 5.14.  This is a very long thread, can you point to or summarize the interim steps needed?  I will go back and look for the actual posts, but this would serve as a cross reference to make sure I got everything correct.  Thanks.

Update:

So to go from LTS (5.6)  I would change the Repository as follows:

Upgrade from LTS (5.6) to 5.10.24-ls21

Currently: linuxserver/unifi-controller:LTS

Change to:  linuxserver/unifi-controller:5.10.24-ls21

Then upgrade from 5.10.24-ls21 to 5.14.23-ls26

change Repository field to linuxserver/unifi-controller:5.14.23-ls76

Does that sound right?

Thanks @Hoopster.

@PeteAsking, I was able to successfully update to Controller 5.14.23 without any issues by first upgrading to 5.10.24.  The database was upgraded by 5.10.24 prior to upgrading to 5.14.23.

All my APs (1 local, 5 remote) showed up without issues.

@Hoopster, Would you happen to know what would be a rock solid firmware for the APs to match Controller 5.14.23?

All of my APs are currently on firmware version 4.3.24.11355.  I have had no issues at all with this firmware.

I believe this is the latest as no updates are showing in the controller.

FWIW this version prevents my Chromecasts from working, so I had to bump up to the RC ver 4.3.26.11358 to get them working again.

I do have Chromecasts and Google speakers on my network.  Was the firmware prior to 4.3.24.11355 (4.3.21.11325) stable?

Prior versions worked fine for me as well, but, I do not have Chromecast/Google speakers.  I have the Amazon version of such things with Fire TV sticks/cubes and Echo/Alexa and they work fine on all versions of firmware I have used.

When I install this docker container, the process I used was

add: https://github.com/linuxserver/docker-unifi-controller/ to my Template repository in my docker settings

add a new container

select the "Unifi-controller" template

put the following in the Repository field: linuxserver/unifi-controller:version-6.0.43

Click apply, the container starts.

When I go to http://unraid-ip:8080 it redirects to :8443 and shows a Ubiquiti login page, the blue page prompting for a username and password, I input my Ubiquiti credentials but I get an invalid login notification as if my credentials are invalid, but they are not.

in previous installations I have used my same credentials for ui.com. Am I doing things wrong? When I click reset password and input my email address I don't get a password reset email either.

I don't get the standard Unifi controller setup screen seen in the guide from Ubiquiti seen in the following picture

image.thumb.png.4077af6cca3ce55e9a6539114e264cbe.png

Edit 1:

When reading through additional posts on this thread I saw that people were advocating for using 5.14.23-ls76, when trying to use that version I am able to go to ip:8443 and I get the following error :

UniFi Controller startup failed

We do not support upgrading from 6.0.43.

Edit 2:

Figured out my problem:

I had an old config in my /mnt/user/appdata/

opened a shell

cd to /mnt/user/appdata/

rm -rf unifi-controller

828467341_ScreenShot2021-01-20at11_25_13PM.png.5aba38c50dc7ab71cc9203dc748cccc2.png

Created a new docker container and I was good to go.

Updating this post and leaving this here just in case anyone else has issues.

I can't remember for sure, but I don't think had issues with that version.

I have a memory of my issues w v4.3.24.11355 not being the first time that my Chromecasts stopped working, but I think that might have been a config issue with the network rather than a firmware problem. Sorry I can't be more definitive.

I think go to the earlier version and wait for ver 4.3.26.11358 to be officially released. If you have problems with the earlier version, it's easy to jump to the "known good" RC (at least, I'm not having any issues with it), and I believe you'll still receive upgrade notifications when new versions come out.

Thanks for taking one for the team. Good luck on your adventure. 😀

Do I have to be a beta tester or something to see it?

Yeah, sorry about that.  A notification popped up in my email and I clicked the link and was able to see it.  There is not an indication in the post it is a beta release so I wrongly thought it was a general release.

Of course, with Ubiquiti, everything is a beta release and if they say it is "beta" it is probably really alpha code.

For the benefit of those who would like to see what is coming, here is the post about 6.1.51.  It is the longest change log I have ever seen with a UniFi release and that is saying something:

Additional information

Please report any issues you encounter with this release using the Report Bug form.
(Recommended) - Create an up-to-date backup before upgrading your controller in the event any issues are encountered.

Existing UniFi Network controllers must be on one of the following versions in order to upgrade directly to this version:
6.1.51 and earlier 6.1.x versions.
6.0.45 and earlier 6.0.x versions.
5.14.25 and earlier 5.14.x versions.
5.13.33 and earlier 5.13.x versions.
5.12.72 and earlier 5.12.x versions.
5.11.52 and earlier 5.11.x versions.
5.10.27 and earlier 5.10.x versions.
5.9.33 and earlier 5.9.x versions.
5.8.30 and earlier 5.8.x versions.
5.7.28 and earlier 5.7.x versions.
5.6.42 and earlier 5.6.x versions.
Most earlier versions are also supported for direct upgrade, going back to 3.1.0.

Controller updates may cause your adopted devices to reprovision after controller upgrades.
An updated/current version of Java 8 must be installed on the system hosting the controller software. Java 9 and later are not yet supported.
As of UniFi Network controller 5.9, if using Cloud Access, the host system/device requires outbound 8883/tcp to be open/unrestricted. Find up-to-date port requirements here.
Minimum supported device firmware for U6-Series devices is 5.29.0, UAP/USW is 4.0.9, and for USG it's 4.4.34.
If you have any 'service dns forwarding options' configuration defined in config.gateway.json, it will overwrite the provisioning of statically defined name servers, leaving you with no DNS. Either remove the 'service dns forwarding options' portion of config.gateway.json, or add additional 'options' lines defining name servers, such as 'server=1.1.1.1', 'server=8.8.8.8', etc.

Microsoft Windows specific
Users running 64-bit Windows should only have 64-bit Java installed. If you have 32-bit Java installed then we recommend uninstalling it.

macOS Specific
We stopped bundling Java as of UniFi Network 5.11.47. If you're installing that release or later please make sure you have manually installed a current release of Java 8 beforehand. Only the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is required.
Oracle JRE 8 offers the simplest path as it will simply "just work" without requiring any changes. We may investigate alternative JVMs and update this message accordingly.

Debian/Ubuntu specific
For Debian/Ubuntu users installing via our repo, please update your APT source (see HERE).
We support MongoDB 3.6 since 5.13.10, older controllers only support up to MongoDB 3.4.

I thought their normal releases was beta...

Same here...

I did update yesterday and it seems to be working but I cant see a later firmware than 4.3.24.11355 which is strange. I did roll that out also... On the site it says that 4.3.26.11358 should exist but I cannot find it?

So far it seems to have worked for 1 day, but will just wait now. I dont see a prompt for that 6.1.51 version yet but agree that one has a lot of changes so it might be a bad one to upgrade to. This particular one doesnt have too many 'fixes' (aka things that might be broken due to new code) so hopefully it will be ok. I will just let you all know what happens. Not sure if anyone else sees the 4.3.26 firmware in their controller or if its just me who does not see it...

All my APs have the 4.3.24.11355 firmware and no update is showing for a later version.

I haven't updated to that firmware yet, I saw complaints when I did a search for that string. How many different AP's are you running successfully with that version?

I have two UAP-AP-LR and one UAP-AC-IW.  So, not a lot.

The problems reported earlier in this thread with firmware version 4.3.24.11355 were related to Chromecast.  I have seen no issues and have been running that firmware for about 51 days.

I had an issue w/ the constant adopting/disconnect loop.  Maybe the following will help someone else.

I have the unraid box set with a DNS resolvable name in pfsense.  In my case just "tower".  So using ssh from the unifi device I can ping w/ simply "ping tower".  The controller hostname/ip set to the ip used to access unraid.  I know have selected "Override inform host with controller hostname/IP" as suggested by others and should hopefully keep the issue from reoccurring.

Since I am using Windows I used putty to ssh into the device using the ip address assigned by the router (pfsense) and port 22.  The mistake I used here was trying to use the controller ID/PWD instead of what was in the Site/Device Authentication field of the controller.  Of course w/ SSH checked there.  With those credentials login to the device.  Then run the "set-inform http://unraidip:port/inform"

replace unraid ip w/ the address for your unraid box such as 192.168.x.x

replace port with the port number defined in your unraid unifi controller container as "Port used for HTTP portal redirection.:"

the port thing was the next stumbling block for me as I was attempting to use the port of the controller.  I'm not the best w/ these things so hopefully this is clear enough for anyone w/ a similar issue.  Sorry if it is a repost.  Thank  you to everyone providing their assistance.
