Unable to Set Jumbo Frame MTU to 9216

Featured Replies

My switch's jumbo frame MTU defaults to 9216, however I am not able to set in UnRaid.

In UnRaid Network Settings I get this error message:  "Value must be less than or equal to 9198"

How can I set MTU to match my switch's 9216?

Given the error message you're receiving, you can't. But why do you want to, anyway? Just set the MTU on your server and everything else on your network to the standard Jumbo frame size of 9000 bytes and enjoy the fact that your switch will pass the Jumbo frames. Bear in mind that Jumbo frames are not backwards compatible, so if you have anything on your network that doesn't support them you won't be able to use them so stick with an MTU of 1500. With gigabit Ethernet there isn't much to be gained anyway and in my experience Jumbo frames are more trouble than they're worth unless you have a dedicated segment or a point-to-point connection. With 10G Ethernet it's a different matter.

My switch uses 9216, and yes this is for 10Gbe.

Your switch expresses MTU as a layer 2 size which is 18 bytes bigger than the layer 3 MTU size on your server.

In other words Unraid 9198 == switch 9216

Ps. as mentioned by @John_M if you have any device in between not supporting this MTU size, it is asking for trouble.

That actually makes sense, thanks for clarifying that.
