I have left it in multi-rail for now and can't imagine 4 spinners would ever pull 40 amps (or boy is my power bill going up).

just got another pre-clear error report.  Looks like at least part of my trouble has not been solved!    nothing like spending $150 to NOT solve a problem 🙄

I noticed from your listed spec your pre-clears are on esata ports??

 

Is this still the case??? Have you tried pre-clearing the drives internally??

In the interest of trouble-shooting I'm certainly willing to try.  You never know, however there are only two drives on that power cable and it's hard to imagine they are impacted by a 40 amp over-current protection.

The two eSata ports are plugged into two of the MB main internal Sata ports.  It's just a matter of convenience to not have to open the case and move drives around until they have been cleared and usually I've gone through the unRaid replacement before doing it.  I don't actually have a spare drive slot inside so I'd have to pull a spare, then preclear, then replace, then go physically remove the old drives and put the spare back in.

 

See attached photo, this is what I have on the back of the case and have used to pre-clear a number of drives.  Do you think this extra cable in line could be causing an issue given I've done it a number of times in the past?

I would be tempted to disconnect one of the ports connected to the esata header and directly connect 1 of the problematic drives and attempt another preclear. ive had issues with those cables before, not with unraid but with windows, not saying this is the issue but process of elimination.

Can I ask a quick question? I have the Corsair HX850 Gold w 16 Sata power connectors. I have 2 more drives and was going to use a Sata multiplier for that can I do that? if not how can I run all the drives?

Many of us have done this without problems as long as the PS has a single +12V rail.  However, there have been reports of fires with some SATA power Y-connectors.   You can see which ones to avoid by looking at this video:

Also my power supply has a switch to set to multiple railes or one. I bet I need to set it to one!
