October 5, 201015 yr Hi, I moved all my data to the unraid box I made and without thinking removed it on the original drives. Now when I try accessing the box only browsing sometimes takes 5 mins! ( Showing the directory structure ). When I get in one I can't seem to open/reach/copy any file except very very small ones ( < 3kB or something ). In linux ( Ubuntu 10.04 ) it just crashes after a while and doesn't work at all! In windows it tries forever and finally gives me an error: "An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the fiel. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem. Error 0x8007003B: An unexpected network error occured." I searched for the code but without results... I tested after all this if I could still write to the array and writing is no problem! ( As far as I can test ofc because I can't read it back ). All my data is on the array now and I have no more copies.... please help. Greets, dzn

Can you access your server via the web-management console at 192.168.1.133 (the IP address it apparently was assigned) Is your issue only with file-explorer and SMB shares? Joe L. Describe your network, your client PC's your router, etc... Do you have the network nameserver and gateway defined on the unRAID setup pages? Which PC on your LAN is acting as the Master-Browser?? October 5, 201015 yr Author Hi, My network here is as following: FileServer ----------------------| Switch------ Router ---- Modem ---- ISP Main 'Browsing' PC ------------| | | Other Switch and Computers The switch and network interfaces are at Gigabit speed, the router 100mbit. I can acces the webinterface. The problem is only witht a fileexplorer and smb shares. The nameserver and gateway are the router and are defined ( 192.168.1.1 ). The 'master-browser' is a dual boot system running windows 7 and ubuntu 10.04 and has a dynamic IP. Hope this all helps... I really need the data ( and unraid to work ). Thanks for your time already!

I'm not sure if you understood what I meant by "master-browser" It is the term for the computer on the lan that has the service that translates \\tower\sharename into an IP address and SMB connection. Do you have the unRAID server configured as the master browser? It could be by dual-booting there is no master-browser running when you have the problems. In any case, in the "Settings" of unRAID, try enabling "Local Master" = "Yes" and make sure you have the workgroup set to that of all the PCs in your LAN. Joe L.
October 5, 201015 yr Author Hi, I enabled the Local Master and now I can see all files quickly and it opens them quickly BUT they all ( +- 800GB ) seem to be corrupt When I try to copy them I get ( windows ) 'Invalid File Handle' and when I try to play/view/listen to them I get all kinds of errors depending on which type of file and what player/viewer I try. After the data was copied I was able to view 1 thing ( 2 days ago ) and that worked... I didn't change anything, how can this be?? Edit: I just checked: after setting local master "yes" when I copy data over to the array I can read it back the way it should be. All previous data returns errors... Hope this is fixable.

October 5, 201015 yr I'm using: Mobo: Asus M4A78LT-M LE 760G RGVSM Drives: 3 x Samsung HD153WI EcoGreen F3 1.5TB Not to distract from troubleshooting...but what made you question the motherboard Raj? The "LE" has had problems: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=7897.msg76308#msg76308
October 6, 201015 yr Author I read through the posts but I don't really understand my options here... So all my data is lost? I have to find another mobo? Just bought this one The files are there, the bits are written! There must be a way to get those back... really?
October 6, 201015 yr mybranr: Thanks for pointing out the LE post, I had forgotten about that issue. I was thinking dzn might have had a motherboard with known issues (I had the nForce4 in mind). It is possible that dzn is having issues with the NIC, as t33j4y did. This bit sounds similar to both cases: when I browse the folders on the server' date=' the listing of the contents can take 20-30 seconds - or crash the explorer - even though there are only 10-15 entries.[/quote'] Scale that up to the amount of data that dzn has and it could be the same symptom. As for the drives, I was wondering if he as using advanced format drives that weren't in compatibility mode (EARS without jumpers, etc.). Turns out he isn't (which is good). dxn: Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but things aren't looking good for your motherboard. Do you have another motherboard available for testing? Also, do you have a separate known-to-be-working NIC that you could try? You would have to disable the onboard one for unRAID to detect it. Looks like that's what worked for t33j4y (and buying a new NIC is a lot cheaper than replacing the motherboard). NIC problems can sometimes cause corrupted data, so there is a chance that the data will not be recoverable. Do you have the data backed up elsewhere, or is that your only copy?
October 6, 201015 yr Author This is my only copy now...never expected this to happen...I haven't got another NIC around here, might get a very old one this weekend... But I think it could be something else...because: - After setting the 'master' setting to yes the browsing goes very fast now. - The data seems not 'corrupt' in the classic way, it opens the file but then complains about it not being at that location or other errors implying a 'bad file handle' - After setting the previously mentioned setting I could copy data over fine and read it back perfectly. - Writing was never a problem...if it were the motherboard wouldn't this be a problem too? All this was last night I tested, i'm not home now but I'll preform more tests when I'm! If the nic was the problem...the data wouldn't be written right you said...so if it really was corrupt no chance in mounting the drives from a live cd and recovering the data right? It looks like as another file path is served to an application when I try to open one and that address can't be resolved or something... Thanks for the help yet, ...still hoping this is just a setting or something... Greets, dzn Edit: I tested some more and I was wrong, it still doesn't work! Only very small files work. ( 2kB and so ) Ideas...? Edit 2: I telnetted in the box and copied over a file to the flash drive, shut the server down, put the flash in my computer and then the file was perfectly readable, no errors! So the data is there and not corrupt, so it gets written right, I just cant read it back ( if larger then 2kb. ) Pls help Edit 3: I got my hands on another NIC and can report it works fine with that one in a pci slot! So it is the mobo after all. This sucks... out of alle the possible mobo's I picked the incompatible one! Will this be fixed? Someone knows?? Are there other disadvantages about using a pci nic instead of the integrated one except from being slower? ( and using more power )? For developpers: all the data I had written before is fully readable and not corrupt! Seems the problem only consists of reading it and not writing. Also reading very small files worked! Can I get some feedback here?
October 7, 201015 yr Is there nothing I can do to make the mobo work? You can see if there is a newer driver for your chipset available and then compile it for the unRAID release and give it a try. If none is available, then there is nothing you can do but replace the motherboard or use an alternate network interface card. (remember, it could be a hardware issue OR a software one)
October 7, 201015 yr Author Can you point me somewhere how to compile and get and install the new driver?
October 7, 201015 yr You can see if there is a newer driver for your chipset available and then compile it for the unRAID release and give it a try. http://partner.atheros.com/Drivers.aspx The driver installed in unRAID is L1C, the driver has been updated to L1E Release notes: (also included in the .tar)
October 7, 201015 yr Can you point me somewhere how to compile and get and install the new driver? General instructions are here: http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Building_a_custom_kernel Many use a VmWare or VirtualBox instance of unRAID for this instead of a dedicated hardware development system. See here for VmWare example: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=862.msg18630#msg18630 or here for VirtualBox example: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=1831.msg14753#msg14753
