initiate extended self test

Featured Replies

The short version of my question is how do you initiate an extended self test on an unassigned device?    When the drive is spun down and you click on the drive designation (sdX), nothing opens up and the drive doesn't spin up.   The only time I can enter the device page (where you see the button to start a self test) is when a preclear is running but then I can't start the self test, IE nothing happens.  I'm certain I'm missing a process for initiating this test.

The longer version, is I'm trying to resolve a very strange issue with two drives that keep failing during pre-clears.  The start of my question is here:

I'm not trying to start two threads on the same issue, but I do need to figure out how to run an extended self test because I'm not convinced this is a dead drive issue as it fails and then cause the whole main page of unRAID to go crazy with drives dropping out of the array into unassigned devices, but still respond and work.  I think the problem may be a software issue or other hardware but I need to self test to verify.

I have already spent $160 on a PSU that didnt resolve the problem.

IIRC with UD disk needs to be mounted (and formatted first in case it's a new or clear disk) to access SMART data and tests, doesn't make much sense but it's not a problem, just don't access the disk during the test or it will take much longer.
