Hello, I have a question about the included/excluded disk feature. Does this only work for the samba shares?

 

I had set a share to included disk disk4, i just realized though it's not working.

 

I have rtorrent installed and a rss filter setup to download my shows to /mnt/user/tvseries.... I was under the impression the included disk will only put them on 1 disk, disk4.

 

I'm guessing now the setup is for the samba shares only and when i move files over the network and not directly to the server. I can readjust the fitler to download the files on /mnt/disk4/TVseries, but i wanted to be sure my theory is correct about the incliuded.excluded disks.

The included/excluded disks parameters are used by the shfs file-system driver for the user-shares under /mnt/user.

It has nothing to do with SAMBA.  It does not matter what you use to create files under /mnt/user.   

 

Therefore, you probably have the settings configured incorrectly.

 

(I don't use included/excluded disks at all, but if you post your share settings it might be apparent to somebody who does what needs to be changed to have them work as you desire.)

My disk share for included disk was set to:

 

disk4

 

 

I figured by having an included, i wouldn't need to exclude.

 

Today I added to the excluded;

 

disk1,disk2,disk3,disk5

 

I'm manually moving my TV shows to the disk4 and i'll monitor.

 

As per the wiki though i shouldn't have to configure the excluded disk;

The Included disks(s) parameter defines the set of disks which are candiates for allocation to that share. If Included disk(s) is blank, then all present data disks are candiates. For example, to restrict a share to using only disk1, disk2, and disk3, you would set Included disk(s) to disk1,disk2,disk3.

i'm definitely having problems with the included disk section.

 

I have a share set to only put things in disk4. At first every worked fine, but that was because disk 4 had the most available space (it was a brand spanking new drive). After a few months as the size got reduced and high water allocation kicked in, it now puts the stuff in other disks.

 

Here is a pic of my share configuration and see how things in that folder are on the wrong disks;

 

 

 

Using include only is working just fine for me.

 

Try maybe moving the files and making sure the directory all the way to the root TVseries directory on disk3 is deleted then set and Apply the share settings before rebooting the machine to ensure any past knowledge of the share being on disk3 is deleted.

they fall in disk 2 and others as well. Does the split level maybe play a role?

 

I have the split level set to 1 but within TVseries i have folders like House,entourage, etc...

The split leve should not have any effect.

I know this is an old thread. But I would like a follow up on this. Is it necessary to use both "Included disks" AND "Excluded disks" to have this working right. It just seems useless to fill in the excluded disk when you have already filled in the included disk section. If I say I wnat to INCLUED disk1 and I don't list anything else. Shouldn't that imply that I don't want any other disk included... Or I'm I just missing the point completeley !

Yes, you can fill in just one or the other field, or neither field.

not against using, I've just never needed that feature in how I use my array.  I tend to write directly to the disk shares, which basically means I know exactly which disk is "included" 

Me too!  I tend to fill up my disks one at a time and enjoy a small performance advantage by writing to the disk shares (actually I use custom Samba shares instead of disk shares).

Well, that's interesting. I wasn't sure if the Parity would still work when writing directly to the disks. And I'm liking the idea of never running out of disk space. Just add disks and your good to go
