detz
So when I started I left Included disk empty so it's been putting data on all disks but I just relized that because of this all disks never spin down. So, I want to change it to go to one disk only which I did in the User Shares section but will the existing data be moved now or will I have to move it manually? What's the best way to do this? SSD
The user share settings basically apply to new writes. It will still find files on other disks and include in the user share. To make this happen you will need to move the files using the disk shares. Many users start loading their arrays with data without fully understanding the feature and settings. New users would be smart to copy data to disk shares initially, and then experiment with the user shares for writing. Link to comment
detz
What's the best way to move data from one drive to another on the same share? Should I just stop the array and mv /mnt/disk1/Dir/* /mnt/disk2/Dir/* ? Link to comment
kizer
Nope do not stop the array. Just goto town. Heres how mine is setup just to give you an idea. Disk Shares - hidden read/write //tower/disk1/Movies //tower/disk2/Tv //tower/disk3/Mp3 User Shares - read only Movies include disk1 Tv include disk2 MP3s include disk3 The great thing about User shares in my case as long as I create a folder in any of the Disk shares for Example Movies the user shares will see it and display anything in them. The end user wouldn't have a clue that I'm moving things around. So if you have Movies on disk1 and want to move them to disk2 Create a Movies folder on disk2 and then move them over. You have to make sure that any subfolders that are in disk1 are recreated on disk2. When you are done moving files you can simply delete the Movies folder on disk1. I normally update the users share from include disk1 to include disk2 Link to comment
SSD
Try midnight commander (mc) from a telnet prompt. Do not stop the array. If you are moving a lot of data you might want to run from the console or use the screen package so that the move isn't stopped when the telnet window closes. Link to comment
