October 6, 201015 yr i believe there is a serious problem with damaged files on my unraid server. a parity check reveals 0 errors. i have not changed hardware since the day i built the tower over a year ago. been running unraid 4.5.6 since it was released. about 2 weeks ago, i noticed music starting to skip during playback. this occurrence is not random; it would skip at the same exact time in each song. steps taken to troubleshoot this: i have observed this during playback of dozens of different albums that have never had playback problems in the past, so the problem is not limited to one faulty audio rip. played music from multiple different computers on the same network as the server used different music players on multiple computers replaced network cables and changed routers if i copy a perfectly OK song from my local computer to the server, it has skips once it's on the server. if i copy a song with skips from the server to the local machine, the skips are in the same places. if i do the file transfer using Teracopy, i get CRC errors on most (but not all) of the files when i copy from the local machine to the server. when i use Teracopy to copy from the server to the local machine i get no CRC errors ran two parity checks. both clear can anyone recommend ideas or guess at the specific problem i'm having? these files are clearly damaged.
October 6, 201015 yr I was going to suggest CRC checking the files, but you already did that. So you definitely have some data corruption. Have you noticed if the problem is isolated to one particular drive in the server? If so, run SMART on that drive and post it here. If not, run SMART on all your drives and post it here. Also, are you running parity checks (the unRAID default) or parity verifies (available through unMenu)? In the future, you may want to run parity verifies, since then they give you a chance to correct corrupted data using good parity data. unRAID's default parity check always trusts the data on the data drive (even if it is corrupted, since unRAID has no way of knowing that), and always overwrites/corrects the data on the parity drive (even if it is good, since again unRAID has no way of knowing that). If that happens it should be reported as a parity check error, though. I'm surprised you didn't see any errors.

October 9, 201015 yr Does this mean that I don't have corrupted data? No, it means you might have bad memory, or a bad network chipset, or something on the LAN. The "long" tests would not show any evidence of flipped bits in your media files. It would tell you of un-readable sectors that have been re-allocated. The bad CRC when using Teracopy is an indication of either a single disk that reports differing data when repeatedly addressed, or, a bad network interface, or, perhaps even bad memory. (or bad memory settings of clock speed, timing or voltage) Step 1 if you have not already done it is a memory-test, preferably overnight. (at least have it go through multiple cycles) Step 2. a test of individual disks using a checksum on a specific known file from the linux command line. You can use md5sum /mnt/disk1/path/to/large_file.iso run it multiple times, it should always return the same checksum. Use a version of md5 checksum on Windows to compare it to the same file there. Make sure the file is a very large one. (multi-gigabytes if possible) Joe L.
October 17, 201015 yr Author Thanks Joe. Memtest revealed a million errors. Replaced the RAM today and problem is fixed.
