Considering a build...

First time poster, in absolute love with Unraid.

 

For a test run, I threw it on my old Phenom x6 with 16 gb of ram and 5 2 tb drives. Been doing some testing, thinking I am going to add a cache drive to see if that helps network file transfers.

 

I absolutely love it. Honestly, better than Freenas, better than openmediavault, and worth whatever I have to pay for the devices.

I'm planning a new build and I can't do anything small time, so here is the build list I am working on.

My plan is to do hardware passthrough and give linux (What I use all day) the AMD card and one of the nvme drives, give 10 the other nvme drive and the Nvidia card, then run all of the neato dockers and services I want.

Valid point on the passthough.

 

As far as the HDDs, explain a little about why 4 bigger drives would work better than the smaller drives? Something to do with the parity or the fact that they're 7200 rpm? Just interested.

Fewer larger drives equal fewer points of failure, less heat and noise, less power consumption, etc. but it also means that if you lose a drive and the data can not be recovered, you could lose more data than with a smaller drive.

The higher-density larger drives do also reduce parity check times.

I upgraded from more 3TB drives to fewer 8TB drives a couple of years ago and I definitely feel it is a better overall system in the current configuration.
