October 8, 201015 yr Hey all. Just bought a laptop and trying to set it up so I can access my unraid box through my wireless router. I have two pc's which are wired to the router and they have no problems. All computers including laptop and unraid are on the same workgroup. When I type "\\tower" into my computer address bar I get a message saying windows cannot find it check spelling. If I type "tower" into internet browser it doesn't work. If I type the ip address into the internet browser then it brings up the web management page. All pc's have static ip as does the unraid box. Tower even shows up when I view my network, but I still cannot access it. Can anyone help me? I did look in the manual and faq but only results I could find were concerning mac's. My laptop is running windows 7 as are my other computers. Cheers.
October 8, 201015 yr SuperTom44 a couple threads down is my thread on the same subject. give it a read and see if any of the suggestions work out for you. by some stroke of luck its now working for me. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=8179.0 -=Jason=-
October 9, 201015 yr Author Thanks ill have a read but its going to be hard for me to follow as its very specific to your settings. I can access the server via its ip but not via \\tower.
October 9, 201015 yr I know nothing about Win7, but your problem is caused by a name resolution issue on your laptop. Is it possible that you've made an entry for tower in the hosts file of your other computers, but not on the laptop? What is the configured DNS server address on each of the computers?
October 9, 201015 yr Author The dns server is the same on both laptop and pc. I haven't edited the host files on my win7 machine, however I will try editing them on my laptop see if that helps.
October 9, 201015 yr //tower is handles by DNS name server \\tower is handled by windows Master-Browser protocol. Has nothing to do with DNS. Note: forward-slashes vs. back-slashes.
October 9, 201015 yr Is the laptop in the same Workgroup as the other computers? Changing to the same workgroup solved a similar issue I had in the past.
October 10, 201015 yr Author Laptop, pc and media server are all on the same workgroup. After adding an entry to the host file for the server all seems to be working. Not sure what was causing the issue. All I gotta do know is remember how i set my network drives to auto connect lol.
October 11, 201015 yr supertom44, I seem to have the exact same problem that you had before. Not too familiar with most of the network term but would like to know what exactly you did to get it work. What does it mean "adding an entry to the host file for the server"? Thanks.
October 11, 201015 yr "adding an entry to the host file for the server"? Edit \Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file by adding IP-hostname pair information of your unRIAD. quick and dirty way to fix domain name resolution issue.
October 11, 201015 yr //tower is handles by DNS name server \\tower is handled by windows Master-Browser protocol. Has nothing to do with DNS. Note: forward-slashes vs. back-slashes. Ooops! Well, I did say that I know nothing about Win7!
