[SOLVED] Wireless NIC Passhrough (Code 10 device cannot start)

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to passthrough a Wireless NIC to a Win 10 VM.  I've tried stubbing the device which gets it to show up in the list of Other PCI Devices.  That then appends the XML to like like below but while the device passes through, Windows can not start the device and I get an Code 10.

<hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
      <driver name='vfio'/>
      <source>
        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x05' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
      </source>
      <alias name='hostdev3'/>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x09' function='0x0'/>
    </hostdev>

@IamSpartacus Same as you I got error 10 when passing through the wireless controller to a VM. Usual a onboard wireless controller also comes with an BT device which I couldn't find in Unraids device list or after the passthrough inside the VM. The Cambridge Silicon Radio is an extra USB BT dongle I've plugged in, it's not the onboard one. I noticed something. Check your USB devices and you should see a device called Intel Corp. I never knew what this is.

Pass this to the VM with the 3168NGW and the wireless controller will work and you should see your wifi networks.

Thanks for the suggestion but no dice for me.  Mind sharing your Unraid OS syslinux file?

Nothing stubbed. Only ACS override "both" selected.

kernel /bzimage
append isolcpus=8-15,24-31 pcie_acs_override=downstream,multifunction initrd=/bzroot

I only manually added the following part

    <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
      <driver name='vfio'/>
      <source>
        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x05' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
      </source>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x04' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
    </hostdev>

and selected the "Intel Corp" USB device. And the VM xml i used to get it working.

EDIT:

as a note. It's a relativly fresh Windows install with Q35 i had on hand which I used for testing some Qemu stuff on. OS disk was reset, so it's kinda fresh.

I quickly have set up a i440fx VM as described before with the same result. As soon as I give the VM the "Intel Corp" USB device besides the Dual Wireless AC 3168 Controller and out of the box with a fresh windows install the controller works, wifi networks are visible and usable.

Still no dice for me.  Even setup a brand new Win10 VM for testing this and does the same thing.  Here's my syslinux (same as yours) and my XML.

kernel /bzimage

I don't get it. Same hardware, same Unraid version. You switched to 6.7_RC5/6 right? The only thing i noticed in your xml is that you put the device on  bus='0x00'. I always had it on a higher bus number.

      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x08' function='0x0'/>

BIOS version is also the latest I guess, right? I'am on P3.30.

Lol dude...that did it.  I never even set that myself, I just omitted the address type and Unraid auto adds that line.  But changing the bus number fixed it.  Unreal.  Thanks for spotting that!

this helped me with my issue as well.  i was trying to pass through a 9800GT graphics card to Windows XP VM and it would show up and let me install drivers but had a code 10.  i tried a bunch of crap but then saw this and figured maybe it'd work on a graphics card.  I did break my VM once but was able to use the vdisk on a new VM.  but i changed my bus for the 9800 in the xml from 0x00 to 0x06, and it was detected in the vm then without code 10 error.  at that point i just had to reinstall the nvidia drivers and reboot.

thanks for this super odd solution

I also got it working on my wireless card and connected through hotpoint,  but i just can't get dhcp adress from my router.  do you have the same problems with me? and i also can't connect to my iphone hotpoint. really wired.

Hi there,

Seems like i am having similar issues with my CPU cooler. Suddenly when i rebooted my Unraid Server, my Kraken Z63 is not detected anymore. But strangely, the device is detected at the other VM's.

and also the XML files of my VM

I also got it working on my wireless card and connected through hotpoint,  but i just can't get dhcp adress from my router.  do you have the same problems with me? and i also can't connect to my iphone hotpoint. really wired.

Did you resolve it now ?

I also see the similar issue, the the pass-through wireless card can not join any Access Point (Hotpoint ) in Windows 10 .
