October 10, 201015 yr Sorry if this has been covered before. I did a search and wasn't finding it. I also have no idea if this is possible with licensing and whatnot, but Synology does it with their NAS: http://www.synology.com/enu/products/features/itunes.php Seems like in unRaid, this would work great with a User Share. Just a though. Another question would be if this kind of solution works with the new Apple TV. I don't have mine yet, but the Apple site says it uses "Home Sharing" so I don't know if this is different than the regular iTunes sharing?
October 10, 201015 yr Have also been investigating iTunes server on unRAID, with a view to putting an AppleTV on my Xmas list. A friend has tried Twonky (albeit on a Thecus); it shows up in the AppleTV menus, and you can see lists of videos, but nothing plays. So haven't experimented myself. Next I was reading up on Firefly (or mt-daap as was). Development of standard Firefly appears to have ground to a halt a couple of years ago, and attempts to get it developed further appear to have foundered. http://www.fireflymediaserver.org/ But 'forked mt-daap' appears in very active development, having been rewritten. http://blog.technologeek.org/category/hacks/forked-daapd and apparently this can pair with an AppleTV. Can't discern whether this would be straightforward or hideous to adapt for unRAID
October 12, 201015 yr iTunes is terrible at handling large libraries (the size of which would justify a separate unRAID server), so I don't really see much point behind this. You can already just point iTunes to use the server to store its library. The performance will be rather slow, but it works.
October 12, 201015 yr Author Yes, but that way, I have to have my unRaid AND another computer running to send movies to my Apple TV. It would be nice if the Apple TV could just browse the unRaid without needing another computer in between. I know how it can be done now, I'm just hoping for a more elegant solution.
October 12, 201015 yr Ah, I see. I'm not too familiar with AppleTV. Can AppleTV read SMB network shares? If so, then just point it at your 'Music' user share and it should all just work. That's what I do with my XBMC HTPC.
October 12, 201015 yr Author Unfortunately, no. AppleTV doesn't read shares... just shared iTunes libraries. That's why you would need some sort of iTunes server software running on the unRaid box.
October 12, 201015 yr I have been looking at forked-daapd and might try to get it running on my unraid server... when i get some free time. The earliest that is likely to be is probably around the beginning of November. If/when i make some progress i will let everyone know. If someone gets to it before me then go for it.
November 12, 201015 yr Am a soon-to-be user of unRaid and would like to see this updated... sounds like a cool hack!
November 18, 201015 yr I've looked into the INSTALL directives, and glibc 2.9+ is required. Since unRAID is based on the Slackware 12.2 and the glibc version available is 2.7, maybe it's impossible to make this work with unRAID. :'(
November 22, 201114 yr Since Apple TV now supports XBMC and Plex, again I don't see much point to an iTunes Server on unRAID. Just use XBMC or Plex to read your user shares!

Since unRAID is based on the Slackware 12.2 and the glibc version available is 2.7, maybe it's impossible to make this work with unRAID. :'( You could try compiling it statically. Then all the dependent libs are included in one giant binary. Sometimes this is what I do when I do not want to have all kinds of package dependencies.
November 22, 201114 yr Author Since Apple TV now supports XBMC and Plex, again I don't see much point to an iTunes Server on unRAID. Just use XBMC or Plex to read your user shares! When you say that Apple TV "supports" XMBC and Plex, do you actually mean supports those, out of the box, from Apple? Or do you mean to say "can be hacked to work with..."? It may be an odd line in the sand, but I'm OK with tinkering with my unRaid box, but I'd rather not jailbreak/root/mess with my AppleTV.
November 24, 201114 yr My understanding is that xbmc now support Apple TV rather than the other way around. S there is a version of xbmc that runs on ATV but I'm not sure if you need to hack the ATV for this to work. If so I believe it is fairly simple to do so if you can handle mods in unRaid then this should be a breeze. I'll probably be buying an ATV shortly as Apple is slowly taking over my life and as an existing xbmc user I will want the two to work together in someway. However I would still like to see an iTunes server running on my unRaid as then I don't need my PC on as well.
November 24, 201114 yr Apple TV (the black one) must be jailbroken to run XBMC. Note that the more recent update to IOS 5 (Apple TV software version 4.4.x) currently requires a tethered jailbreak - meaning that if you power off the ATV completely you must reconnect to a Mac or PC to reboot. Earlier versions of IOS currently have untethered jailbreaks - meaning that they are permanent until you restore or update the ATVs own firmware.

February 6, 201214 yr I'd be very interested in this too. Seems like a perfect setup - and it's not Mac specific. Would make a great plugin.
February 22, 201214 yr Any success with compiling this yet? I'm happy to help create a front-end if someone does the dirty backend work!
April 13, 201214 yr This would be pretty cool if possible. I got an apple tv for Christmas (i think i would have preferred a roku box, but oh well) and it requires another box to run itunes (as stated above). I suppose I could hack it and run xbmc, but my preference would be to NOT do that.
April 13, 201214 yr Have a working build of forked-daapd (iTunes Server) running now. Running tests, seems to be working well so far... Have latest version of iTunes connected, along with an Android Daapd client. Both work simultaneously with no problems. All going well, it should be a plugin within a few days
April 13, 201214 yr Have a working build of forked-daapd (iTunes Server) running now. Running tests, seems to be working well so far... Cool. I look forward to testing. I have 2 Roku SoundBridge units at the ready...
April 13, 201214 yr I'm really interested in testing the transcoding side of things too... Will let you all know how that works.
