Sturdy Build - 8 Drives - Hot Swap

Recommended Posts

The reasons for this build.

I have an 11 year old build that is still running flawlessly, but I figured it was time to upgrade and slim down the number of drives.
I have decided to keep the same motherboard (new) from Supermicro, since I never had any issues.

My server case is a new model.

The memory and CPU I purchased used on Ebay, with a spare motherboard for 50.00.

The raid card is the same model but new from Amazon.

Buy the Lastest Version of Unraid and a Sandisk Flash Drive.

Case

SilverStone Technology SST-CS380B-USA DIY ATX NAS/Server Storage Computer Case with 8 Front Hot Swap Cases CS380B-USA Cases.

There have been some complaints about over heating, but the enclosure that holds the hard drives has been updated.
This should no longer be an issue.
I chose this because it is hot swappable and I don't want to deal with purchasing individual cages.

You can find these new for 119.00
I usually buy one new and one used with a CPU, memory (16GB), motherboard combo.
This way I have an extra motherboard and save some money on CPU and memory.
You can broaden your search term using Supermicro X8SIA or X8SIL, it is more or less the same motherboard but different PCI configuration.
Keep the PCI configuration for the HDMI video card in mind, if you use a different motherboard.
You could also purchase this video card.

Raid Card

I read a lot of debates about which raid card to use, but the proof is in the pudding.
11 years and running and supports my 10tb hard drives.

Power Supply

A bit much for 4 hard drives, but better to future proof.

Thermal Paste
We are using a used CPU, so it is recommended to remove the old paste which will probably just crumble off.

Hard Drives

10 TB External Hard Drive
Trying to have the smallest amounts of hard drives without breaking the bank.

Four hard Drives will give us 30 terrabytes since one drive is used for parity.

Remove External Case Safely
Plenty of shucking videos on Youtube.

Syncing Servers

I am not there yet, but here is a thread about it.

I have used Syncback Pro and it is amazing.

I want to run something natively off the servers, so I am looking into other options.
Running off the servers will speed up the syncing process.

Good Luck!

Did you read these debates on this forum or somewhere else?

Here is just one thread that you might be interested in. I'm sure there are others.
