Vantec Quad controller 4 port USB 3.0 PCIe (UGT-PCE430-4C)

$79.38

Tested two of these Vantec cards in 3 different PCIeX16 slots except for the primary video card slot, they both were broke down into separate IOMMU groups for each controller except in one PCIeX4 slot in which it was grouped together with many other MB resources. The cards I got have both a SATA and molex connector. The card will detect with a SATA power connector but it won't function without the molex connector (ie: Don't use the SATA power connector.)

Stubbing 1912:0015 allows all four to display in the VM editor as separate devices. The USB slot farthest from the PCIe connector is the first device listed, closest is the 4th device listed.  Thumb drives, external drives, and USB2 web cams worked without issue but my 4K Brio's did not.

IOMMU group 23:[1912:0015] 0d:00.0 USB controller: Renesas Technology Corp. uPD720202 USB 3.0 Host Controller (rev 02)

IOMMU group 24:[1912:0015] 0e:00.0 USB controller: Renesas Technology Corp. uPD720202 USB 3.0 Host Controller (rev 02)

IOMMU group 25:[1912:0015] 0f:00.0 USB controller: Renesas Technology Corp. uPD720202 USB 3.0 Host Controller (rev 02)

Thanks for the info. Hope your build goes well.

I was never able to get that one to work, so I went on a spree lately and bought all of the mutlicontroller cards I could find that aren't the sonet. The only card I found that works is  https://www.amazon.com/High-Point-PCI-Express-RocketU-1144D/dp/B015CQ8DCS/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=highpoint+usb&qid=1554312606&s=electronics&sr=1-1  which shows up as 4 asmedia controllers and works a treat.

Excellent! I'll pick up a couple of those if these Vantec's don't work. All the parts for the new build are in, starting to assemble.

I would love to hear if you manage to get the vantec to work. It looks like such a great card and right now it's just sitting in my junk drawer.

Updated the first post, the cards did successfully break out the controllers into different IOMMU slots. Now will test with VM's.

So far, I can see the USB3 controllers in a Win10 VM but Windows is reporting that the device cannot start. I've tried the drivers from the support website, next is to create an ISO from the driver CD that it came with and install from that.

I'm still unable to get mine to find a USB root hub in the VMs. did you do anything outside of stubbing the device?  I assume you just did the pci-id.vfio stubbing?

I used pci-stub.ids to stub the card. I'm not familiar with "pci-id.vfio"

sorry I meant  vfio-pci.ids which I had read was the preferred way to pass PCI devices to KVM

Interesting. I haven't heard of that.

Hey John and Newbie,

I've been scouring the net for one of the pro sonnets without much success and came across your discussion.

I was wondering if I could ask two questions to get some clarity in these very muddy waters...

I'd like to pass 4 independent ports to 4 Win10 VMs - Did you both end up with root hubs working in your VMs?  And in the end which card worked for you?

Thanks!

Armando

I did, but it would not work with high speed USB3 devices such as my Brio 4K web cams. The other one I got worked well and I'm using it in my builds.

@jbartlett Off topic, but do you have a single controller card you can recommend, preferably 4 port that plays nice with usb3? Looking for something in the sub $50 usd range.

Sorry, I don't know of any in that price range.
