April 5, 20197 yr Hey all, I'm running Unraid on my HP MicroServer Gen10, filled with 4 SATA disks. Working fine, but sometimes i'm getting huge I/O Wait's and that is causing some issues. I would like to add a 1TB SSD to the config, but i don't have space in the MicroServer anymore. If i add a SSD on a USB 3 port, will i be able to use that as a cache drive in Unraid? Regards, Dennis

It will probably show up and be assignable, but I doubt it will make the situation better, probably worse. USB is not as robust as SATA, you will likely run into even worse performance and reliability issues, possibly even data loss. Do you have a PCIe slot available? If so, you could add a card with eSATA or even better external SAS connections to a disk cage.

So what you mean is that i add a SATA/RAID controller there and then add the SSD to that?

Something like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B002QJZLCA/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all You can run 8 drives directly off that controller, and many more if you add an enclosure with an SAS expander.
