Mirror & Replace a drive without Rebuilding

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm reading through the procedure for replacing a drive.

https://wiki.unraid.net/Replacing_a_Data_Drive

One of my drive is reporting multiple SMART errors. So time to replace it.

I was wondering, can I manually mirror the old drive to the new one on the side before installing it onto my Unraid server. The purpose of that step is to avoid the drive rebuilding process which is quite stressful for all the unraid system.

What do you think?

There isn't really a good way to do what you ask. If you add the new disk to the array for the purpose of copying it, then it will have to be cleared, which is fine, but then if you want to remove the old disk after copying you will have to rebuild parity. Really a lot simpler to just do the normal rebuild.

Thanks. That is what I suspected.
