Word opens but not the document off Unraid NAS - Windows

Featured Replies

It is a quirk that over the years I have just copy pasted the document on to my desktop and then copied it back to the Unraid NAS - so I thought it may be time to ask if there is a solution.

Essentially whenever I try to access a word doc stored on the Unraid NAS via Windows Explorer, it opens Word but the document does not appear. Nor can I seem to save a word doc directly to the Unraid NAS.

Is this a normal quirk or have I missed something?

If the disk is spun down that the word document is on then it could be taking to long to spin up and word can't handle the delay.  Usually if you try and open the document and it fails, try to open it again in about 10 seconds.

Tried and tried again with the disks spun up. It will not open via Explorer or opening directly in Word, will not save in Word. I have had this quirk since I believe I first used Unraid from version 3.x or was it 2.x? This has been across XP, Vista and 7, and a few different Words.

Any ideas?

Well, have you tried to open this word doc outside of browser? i.e. use MS Word to open this document.

Yes, I have tried to both open and save a document in MS Word. I can see the relevant file but can not seem to access it/make it open or save it.

I have always presumed that this was a 'unique quirk' of Unraid for many years - seems I may be alone on this one.

Since you access data at unRAID through samba, you might want to checkout smaba how to guide as following.

If I am to understand the passage - the were issues over authorship and the saving of an existing file between Samba and MS word. Therefore, I tried to save a new document directly to the same drive to overcomeany prior file issues or authorship problems yet still was unable to.

Am I missing something? Does everybody have this problem accessing Word docs off of an Unraid NAS?

Great reference by the way GK20

When I get back home I will check to see if I have any problems accessing word documents from the NAS itself.

unRAID 4.5.6 with simple security, W7 and Office 2007 here. No problems with Word documents on the server.

Peter

Just checked mine out and it is working fine for me.  I am running 5.0b2 and using Word on a Mac.
