April 8, 20197 yr Hi, As title really. Thinking about Windows alternatives. I Iike that unRAID can be run from USB. It's really only used for simple file serving and HDHomeRun DVR service. The latter is critical; is unRAID a suitable back-end for it? My server has both integrated USB and SD card slots. Can the SD card slot be used as a config backup location (and can it be scheduled)? Thanks! Edited April 8, 20197 yr by ldoodle
April 9, 20197 yr Community Expert Found these three in the built-in Apps system. Below are the support threads for them. I have never heard of anyone using a SD card as a Backup for the USB boot drive. Unraid has a built-in function which downloads a complete backup of the boot drive in a zipped format to the the Downloads folder/directory of the browser that is being used for the Unraid GUI. You should be made aware that Unraid only boots from the USB drive. The OS is actually installed on a RAM disk and it basically runs from RAM after that initial boot.
April 9, 20197 yr Community Expert If the SD card shows up as a device in Unassigned Devices that can be mounted I see no reason why it should not be set up as the backup of the USB drive. In fact I can see a good case for it as that means it is easily movable to another system in the event you need to rebuild your USB drive contents for some reason. in terms of running something scheduled there is the User Scripts plugin that allows you to run a script according to the schedule you want. In this case it would be a very simple script if all you want to do is to copy the contents of the USB flash drive to the SD card. You might want to use a command like rsync to do such a copy rather than a simple ‘cp’ command to on;y copy changes and reduce wear on the SD card but that is only a ‘nicety’ at the end of the day.

Yeah, that's the intention. Not actually be a 'full' backup such that I can boot from it. Literally just once the config is all done, backup the configuration just like you'd do with your router for example.

As was pointed out unRAID provides a way of making a backup from the GUI by clicking on the flash device in the Main tab. However this is a manual process and it sounded like you wanted something more automatic?
April 9, 20197 yr Author Sorry, that was my original intention. The automatic/scheduled thing as you say was a 'nicety'... that actually looks possible . Maybe I misunderstood Frank's reply but I took it as him thinking I wanted to be able to boot from SD if USB fails. Regarding the trial, can the same USB stick be used for the licensed version, or do I have to replace it?

Yes, no problem with upgrading a trial to a licensed version using the same USB stick. In fact there is a good case for recommending this as it means you have already validated that Unraid is happy using that particular USB stick. Edited April 9, 20197 yr by itimpi
