Moving over to Ryzen and Ecc - questions on mobo and memory

Featured Replies

I have one of these laying around with a ryzen 1300x and optionally a 2700x https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/ROG-STRIX-B350-F-GAMING/specifications/

One of the primary reasons i am switching is i want to go to ECC and why not switch to Ryzen at the same time.  I took a look at newegg and wont be buying their memory (its really expensive!)

So will this motherboard be ok? If not what would you recommend? I will be running 6 or so docker containers, plex being the main one.

Also i have a few pages here of ecc ram and am looking for help picking some affordable and reliable ecc ram.  I would say minimum 8gb, probably 16 or more is preferred.

and on ebay i couldnt find where to go for ECC only but here are some

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_dcat=170083&_fsrp=1&_nkw=ecc+ddr4&_sacat=0&_from=R40&rt=nc&Type=DDR4%20SDRAM

Also i have read that memory speed is important, i see a bunch of 2133 ecc for cheap.  Does it make much of a difference on ryzen with unraid?  Not going to be gaming on this machine.

another question.

See sig for context ...

For unraid memory speed has no real impact. What matters is PCIe bandwidth and even a touch of OC there isn't going to be worth it especially if it has any impact on reliability. Afterall, that's why you're going ECC isn't it?

8GB is fine unless you're going REALLY crazy with running dockers and VMs. I ran with 8GB on a single stick for a long time with no problems at all; but I was also only streaming two plex streams at most and usually direct not transcoded. I only upgraded to 16GB because DDR3 is getting pricey so I thought I'd buy for the future before it got too expensive.

I have the ROG STRIX B450 for my desktop. Love it. ECC compatible but I didn't choose to go that route for a desktop. I'd have no concerns using it for unraid; in fact I choose it both for current use and as a hand-me-down future-proof for unraid knowing I'd want ECC DDR4.

As for which ram to choose [shrug] I've had good luck so far with Kingston (again ... see sig). Looking at your link I wouldn't just go for the cheapest. This is for the long haul man. Go out drinking one less night :)

Don't drink much, but i do have a tradition of fixing a drink when building a new computer.  I have been having intermittent sync errors on parity checks, 37, then 7, then 1, then 1 then 2 on the checks i did last week.  Hoping ecc will solve that.  i ordered a 16gb stick of 2133 - https://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-1-16GB-PC4-2133P-DDR4-ECC-MEMORY-RAM-752369-081-Genuine-HP-Hynix/113710196896?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Ill try that first with the 1300x and see how it goes.
