Bad NIC?

Featured Replies

I need a little help trying to figure out if my NIC is dead.  This is the NIC in my HTPC.  It won't connect to the network this morning.  I shut down and rebooted but still nothing.  I also did a repair on it and it couldn't renew the IP address.  The funny thing is my router shows the port as green which would mean there's a connection.  Am I correct in assuming that if the NIC was dead the router port wouldn't show up as green?  It's a Linksys WRT310N.

I know my router is working since I can connect the the internet with my laptop as well as see my Unraid Server.

Not sure what else to check?

When the HTPC is powered off completely (not in S3 sleep), does the router's port still show up as green?  Some routers just show a green light when something is plugged into that port, whether or not there's a live connection.

Tell us more about your HTPC.  Homebuilt?  What are the specs, especially the motherboard?  What OS are you running?

Also, do you have another network cable you can try?  Alternatively, you can try plugging your laptop into the HTPC's cable to see if it works (make sure you turn the wifi on your laptop off).

Check out your router's web interface.  Does it show the HTPC on the network?

what if you statically assign the IP address, does it work then?

You could also reboot the router, even though things are working for your other computers, it could be retaining a invalid entry for your htpc.

Well rebooting the router worked!  I guess I should have tried that first but everything else connected to the router works fine.  Strange.

THanks!

Funny thing is I'm planning on rebuilding it with a Mini-ITX system but not till after Christmas.  Still have to finish upgrading my server.
