May 7, 20197 yr I had a drive failure, or so im lead to believe, it came about after i bought a used 5 x sata into 3 5.25 bays, i oput the array back together after installing, then i had a drivbe failure, i bought a new drive and couldnt get it to show up in the fourth slot in new enclosure, so i placed it on another port, it rebuilt and the array was good, i stopped everything and then put the rebuilt drive back into the slot in the enclosure, then it said that the drive wasnt installed !, i moved it back to the port i used to rebuild it and it detected it as a new device, i rebooted and now it is not showing up at all, i have tried it on numerous ports. If i place one of the other drives from the array into this slot it says there are errors...not sure how to proceed with testing as i do not want to loose any data if there is a problem that is causing drives to fail, can a sata port do this to a drive ? warptower-diagnostics-20190507-1729.zip
May 7, 20197 yr Community Expert There's an unassigned 2TB disk, is that the new disk? 6 minutes ago, loady said: If i place one of the other drives from the array into this slot it says there are errors.. What errors exactly? Ideally we'd need the diags showing these.
May 7, 20197 yr Author diags attached on last post, yes the missing disk is the new one, it had rebuilt successfully and server was fine, its when i moved it back to the enclosure it wasnt detected again. Im just about to remove all the disks and plug them in different ports

May 7, 20197 yr Author so in theory, if i plug these all back in exactly how they were before i inserted new enclosure it should come back ?
May 7, 20197 yr Author right, just done all that, now the disk is doing a fekking rebuild again, but aty least its detected again
May 7, 20197 yr Author so, either the sata port on the mobo is faulty, or the sata port in the enclosure is faulty, i need to ascertain which, everytime the disk isnt detected and then gets detected again, unraid sees it as a new disk and starts rebuilding it again, is this supposed to happen ?, i cant wait 5 hours while it rebuilds everytime i try something different
May 7, 20197 yr Author So, probably not the best way to fix things...as it is in the pictures, i have all the drives connected up to 7 SATA ports, leaving one free, possibly faulty, i dont know yet...the disk is rebuilding again and will take 5 hours, now, once it is rebuilt again, i want to test the free SATA port without it going via the enclosure, if i do this and the disk again becomes not installed and i put it back to the port it rebuilt on, will it start a data rebuild all over again ? i think that the problem may be with the enclosure i bought, i got it from ebay and i have a feeling that slot 4 is the issue as i could not get a disk to detect in it or if it did, it would be in an error state. May 7, 20197 yr Community Expert If you start the array any time that the disk is not being seen that will make the array 'forget' that drive was assigned, and then when you reassign it later when it is seen again it will want to rebuild it. Have you disabled the array auto-start under Settings->Disk Settings? While you are troubleshooting this problem you do not want the array auto-starting. That will give you a chance to see if the system is even seeing the drive before attempting to start the array.

That said, once it has finished and auto start is disabled should I reboot the server for it to detect a disk change ? Or should a change be picked up on a refresh ?
