October 17, 201015 yr Hi First off can I say thank you to all the members who posted in here, I have been able to source all the hardware I need by reading the posts here and following the set up guides / videos. I have an issue that I am unable to resolve and searching on the internet for two days has provided no real help. I have no experience with Linix or configuring network connections. On the table in front of me I have the following setup CX500 psu single 12v rail Asus P5LD2-VM 2 corsair 1 gb matched sticks cm2x1024 5400c4 Pentium 4 processor 540j 3.2GHz 800 MHz FSB 3 hdd's of various sizes All of the above are not in a case they are sat on the table in front of me for testing. After one day trying to boot from a usb stick I finally managed to run UnRAID by connecting a Belkin card reader and selecting the bbs popup and booting from a SD card. That will do for now! So UnRAID has loaded okay and I have typed in ifconfig and got my inet addr to type in firefox, but when I connect my Toshiba T110 laptop to the mobo all I'm getting is "unidentified network" "no network access" Operating system is win 7. I have disabled IPv6 I have activity on the network plug on the mobo, lights flashing etc I have changed the cable and tried a vista laptopand got the same issue. The mobo has a Atheros AR8132 PCIe fast Ethernet, for some reason the ip addresses are not being automatically assigned. I can connect to all my other pc's okay with this laptop. When i run the diagnostics on my laptop the message is "Local area connection" does not have a valid IP configuration. I know how to enter ip addresses in manually but have no clue what to enter.. Can anyone here offer any solutions or suggestions please. Meanwhile I'm going up the local store to buy a few packs of Guinness.. Thank you

October 17, 201015 yr I thought that motherboard had an intel GB lan chipset? Time to find a cheap GB NIC and use that instead.
October 17, 201015 yr Author Thanks for your answers.. I think the atheros chip may be the problem..loads of posts on the internet about issues. I will try my Asus P5W DH Delux board tomorrow and see how I get on.

I;m not sure that I understood everything that I was asked to check but everything seemed to check out on my mobo except this bit. Here's the output from 'netstat -nr' KERNEL IP ROUTING TABLE Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt IFace 127.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 0 According to bblue this is not good should have a few additional lines in there.
