Budget Build Advice

Featured Replies

Hello all...

I'm brand new to the world of unRAID. It seems like it is the perfect solution for my NAS needs. I want to build a budget box. I want something that will get me started for the least amount of money. I am currently looking at this build. I realize that this may not be the fanciest of builds, but it will meet my needs for now, as well as be expandable for the future. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

Case: Antec VSK-2000 Black ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Mobo / CPU: ASRock A330ION Intel Atom 330 PBGA437 NVIDIA ION Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU Combo

RAM: Got extra 2 x 1GB sticks

Power Supply: Athena Power AP-MFATX30 300W Mini ITX / Micro FLEX ATX / ATX12V 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply - OEM

PCIe Card: MASSCOOL PCI-e 4 port SATA2 (SIL3132 Chip) Model XWT-PCIE10

Subtotal: $246.96

Would stear away from an ITX for a budget build. Memory required is DDR3 so make sure your extra RAM is going to work. I would of thought for that sort of money a low power uATX solution would of been possible and more ultimately more expanable.

I think that case will be a challenge to work with. You may have a problem providing adequate cooling to your drives.

It does not appear that the power supply has the form factor that the case requires.

The PCIe card will only support two drives at once (either two internal or two external).

You pay a premium for an ITX board with no real return in such a large case.

The budget build can be tweaked to provide excellent performance and expandability for a very moderate price.
