Internal USB

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

I have located a pci card that, besides some externa usb ports offers one internal:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-2-0-HUB-4-1-PORTS-INTERNAL-PCI-HOST-CONTROLLER-CARD-/230502214772?pt=UK_Computing_Computer_Components_Graphics_Video_TV_Cards_TW&hash=item35ab00ac74

i want my USB inside the case because i feel it is less prone to physical damage when i move or open the case. Also, because it is something new that i have never tried :)

Is there a chance that something like that would not work with Unraid?

PS: It is very cheap, so i dont really mind the money but  the time i will have wasted waiting for it while i could have ordered something else.

PS2: for anyone who might be interested something like this is also a nice choice, i just wont use it because i think it is also prone to damage the way it sticks out of the mobo:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/StarTech-2-Port-USB-Motherboard-Header-Adapter-USBMBADA-/270581761717?pt=UK_Computing_DesktopComponents_RL&hash=item3effee06b5

For this to to work it would have to have its own boot ROM and allow booting from a device plugged into it.  (Your BIOS would otherwise not know about it and not offer as a boot possibility anything plugged into it.)

I do not think is has such a capability.

I used a two port USB plate that came with a motherboard. I removed the plate, and used double-sided velcro tape to stick the ports onto my PSU.

i too am using my usb flash driv inside of my case like posted above. I didn't like the fact that was sticking out the back. so just get one of those usb type that plug into your mobo and your good to go.

It seems that a straight usb internal connection works for all of you, so i am gonna do it this way.

@kenoka: I also have thought of using a usb plate connected to the mobo. it is not as elegant as a usb header (one more cable in the case) but it seems more safe since it can be positioned anywhere in the mobo...

@Joe: what you say makes sense. this is not just an adapter/splitter, it is a card with a circuitry on it. i should have thought of it myself....

Thanx everyone

fwiw, I did it the Kenoka way, works perfectly fine, and no one can unplug it from the outside...feels kinda warm und fuzzy...

That does look nifty. Going to see if I can get me one of them here.
