Adding a resistor to a CPU fan

I have a 5 SATA into 3 X 5.25 drive chassis that has a fan built into it, it's rattling like mad and I found a spare from an old pc I had knocking about, when it's plugged in it sounds like a jet plane and I need to slow it down, what value resistor would I need to add and to which wire ?

    Of course red wire, e.g 12v 0.3A, ~40ohm, so you may add a 40ohm for half org. speed, this is roughly est.
