Adding SATA-card after already setup unraid?

Featured Replies

Couldnt find any information about this..

If i setup and configure a server with unraid today, with a couple of drives (connected to the motherboards sata ports).

And a couple of month from today, i need more disks.

Can i then add a SATA card and connect more drives?

Or is that something that has to be done before setting everything up?

Do i need to redo everything if adding SATA-card and drives to that card? (reinstall unraid, redo config, etc, i.e loose all files)

(i know i can just add drives to motherboard if more ports, or add to an existing SATA-card if it has available ports.

But im confused if adding a SATA-card without loosing everything on the drives are possible..

Depends on the specific card. If you research and find the list of currently recommended cards, (hint, LSI chipset in IT mode) it will work fine. Full blown RAID controllers will probably give you issues, as will most 4 port cards sold.

Adding a new card will never cause you to lose anything on the drives.     However as was mentioned you do want to look for cards that are known to work well with Unraid - all those based on the LSI chipset seem to work fine as long as they are flashed to IT Mode.
