Moving files from one disk to another

Featured Replies

How do I copy folders from one disk to another.  I want to copy a bunch of movies from disk 1 to disk 3.  If I remember from the past, it's faster to do it via telnet command promopt compared to doing it via windows.

Transferring files within the unRAID server (wiki link)

I think midnight commander is supposed to be the easiest solution, though I've never actually used it.  I just do the slow and lazy method - drag and drop over the network.  This also gives me the chance to use TeraCopy's CRC checking ability, which I like.  Alternatively, you could use MC and then run MD5 on both the source and destination files (though this would require that you copy the files and not move them).

in terminal

mc

you now see the midnight commander with a split screen, use your mouse or keyboard to navigate to the folder

F5 will copy  F6 will move/rename

I have not found a way to select more than one file with out using a mouse. my server does not have a mouse only keyboard.

Ok I started MC.  I can't figure out how to select multiple folders.

So on the left I have the folders I want to copy and on the right hand side I go to the disk/folder where I would like to copy them.  How do I select multiple folders as well as when I hit F5 will it automatically push the folder to the where I am on the right hand side?

Digital if you have a mouse right click on each folder it will turn yellow and be "selected"

if no mouse I'm not sure how to do it via keyboard

I've never used MC so I'm just guessing:

Hold shift while scrolling down the list of folders?  Alternatively, hold control to select just certain folders?

Well I tried the right click but I just get a menu coming up.

Mark

Paste

Select All

Scroll

Find

Mark doesn't seem to select it though.  Hold shift doesn't seem to do anything either.

I am not trying to hijack this thread but I am looking at creating some subfolers in my current share.  I will change my split level but I have been wondering how to move the files to the newly created subfolder.  Can I use mc to accomplish this?  Will this affect how my files are distributed?  I don't need to move between disks just to a newly created subfolder.

Thanks for any input

It's funny I can scroll up and down but I can't select anything from the menu.  If I try hitting F5 or F4 etc nothing happens.

Control-T to Mark files in MC, it will turn yellow when Tagged

You need to use putty rather than telnet for mouse input to work.

If using telnet:

ESC 1  = F1    (escape followed by numeral one)

ESC 2  = F2    (escape followed by numeral two)

etc...

Ok, I'm not using putty.  I managed to select the files I want to copy using Control-T but how do I now copy them?  I tried F5 but it doesn't do anything.

Finally it's working!  :)

I feel so pretty dumb.  Files are copying at about 25mbs.  I would have thought it would be a bit faster.  Not much better than through Windows.

wow when i use windows, or tera copy my speed is 1.5-3 MB/s  using mc getting 30ish is  amazing.

but if you go same disk to same disk its done in the blink of an eye.

Well my speed has dropped to about 9mbs using MC.  Both drives may be on my SM-8 card though so possibly that may explain that.

Man, my copy is still going.  I am copying about 500GB from one disk to another and it's now been going for 12hrs and only 70% done at 8mbs.  Is this normal?

seems a little slow, but I had a  old WD Caviar 250GB drive and the copy speed was around 10MB/s it was hooked directly up to the mobo, where as my IDE WD 250GB drive was copying at speeds of 40ish MB/s

I was getting 25MB/s when copying from disk 1 to disk 6, but now that I'm copying from 1-3 which are both WD 1TB Green Drives, it's much slower.  For the first copy one drive was on the SM-8 and one was on the MB.

I think I know why my copy is so slow.  The WD 1TB EARS drive I am copying to doesn't have the jumper on pins 7 & 8.  I have 3 1TB EARS Drives that don't have the jumper on.  This is going to be a long slow process ths weekend.  Pop out a drive, put on the jumber, rebuild parity on it, then do the next drive, then the next!  Arrrhhhhhh!

That is likely your problem.  Yep, it will be an annoying process to add a jumper to each drive, but it is necessary.  In the future, add jumpers to all EARS drives BEFORE using them in your unRAID server or anywhere else.

Hey Rah, currently I am copying the entire contents of the drive to another drive.  Once that is done I am going to run a parity check, then remove the EARS drive which will be empty, put on the jumper, pop it back it, using the following guide from here,http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Advanced_Format_Drives

1.Run a parity check. If there are errors, do NOT proceed, seek help in the forums.

2.Stop the array, power down the unRAID server.

3.Put the Advanced Format drive into compatibility mode (take the action specified on the chart above). This may involve physically removing the drive from the server, or it may not, depending on your configuration.

4.Power up the unRAID server.

5.Go to the 'Devices' page and unassign the Advanced Format drive. Then go back to the 'Main' page and Start the array. The missing disk will be running in emulated mode, and your array will not have parity protection at this point.

6.Stop the array, go back to the 'Devices' page, and assign the Advanced Format drive to the missing disk slot.

7.Go back to the 'Main' page and Start the array. A Data-Rebuild should begin. Let it finish (this will take a long time).

8.Once the Data-Rebuild is complete, run another parity check. After the parity check completes with no errors, then your parity protection is restored. If the parity check returns errors, seek help in the forums.

Can I skip step 7 since once I start the array, the drive will be empty?  There's nothing to rebuild on it.  I'd like to instead copy over the files that I want on it, then when done, do another parity check, step 8.

Good plan.  I recognize that procedure...I think I wrote it :P

You can skip step 7, but I don't recommend it.  The data-rebuild has to occur to keep parity intact (there are ways around this, but they will put your data at risk or generally just be a pain in the ass, and they will definitely add a lot of steps).  As far as the data-rebuild is concerned, it has no idea if you have data on the drive or not.  It only sees 1s and 0s...so even if the drive is all 0s it still has to write those 0s so that parity will be correct.

The data rebuild should take roughly the same amount of time as a parity check (as long as your EARS drives with the jumpers are behaving properly).  It will likely start faster and then slow down as it goes, this is normal.

Slow, steady, and safe is the way I approach anything like this.  Better to wait another night than to put your data at risk.

Also, FYI, you can still access your data on the server during steps 1, 7 and 8.  Doing so may slow down the parity check/rebuild a bit, but it will still complete just fine.

I'm doing a parity check after moving approx 500GB of data and 15% into the parity check I see one sync error.  SHould I be concerned?  I've never had a sync error before so not sure if I should be concerned.
