Do we really need badblocks over smartctl?

If you regularly run parity checks and have notifications set up properly, there really is no need to run badblocks. Where are you seeing this advice to run badblocks on a regular basis?

Although I have tens of HDDs, I've never tried RAID setup. Every HDD is handled as a single drive.

Each HDD has its own duplicate one anyway.

I sometimes see filesystem error together with smartctl pending sector number increased. Then I do e2fsck and recover lost files by rsync from the backup HDD.

Can you advise on my situation?

Should I go with RAID in the future?
