new mainboard (Asus H55) -> LAN corruption

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

my old mainboard died, so I bought an ASUS P7H55/USB3 with an i530 and 4GB RAM. Everything seems to work just fine. Except that when reading the disks via LAN, I'm getting corruption. E.g. reading the same file twice produces different results.

I've done a few tests:

(1) Same problem occurs with 2 different client PCs.

(2) Same problem occurs when bypassing any routers/switches and connecting PCs directly.

(3) Same problem occurs with 3 different ethernet cables.

(4) Problem does not occur between client PCs, it only occurs when reading from unRAID server.

I think this pretty much rules out any problems on the client PCs. Must be a problem with the unRAID server, either hardware or software. So I did some further tests to check the unRAID hardware:

(1) Ran a RAM test for a couple of hours, no errors.

(2) Parity check runs through with 0 errors.

Do you have any tips on how to find out what's wrong exactly? I was thinking of installing Windows 7 on a new harddisk to check whether LAN traffic is corrupted with Windows 7, too. Any other ideas? Maybe some unRAID tweaks to put the LAN driver into a "compatability"/safe mode?

Here's my syslog:

(unRAID 4.5.6)

FWIW, when searching for differences in a hexeditor, the errors are always at file offset 0x??????0f, and it's always bit 2 which is wrong (e.g. 0x04 vs. 0x00).

could it be that the onboard network card is the origin of your problems (it could even be something mechanical such as the panel port not communicating well with the ethernet cable)

you could confirm or rule it out by installing a spare pci network card and checking the results

Yep, thanks. Don't have a spare pci network card flying around right now. But tomorrow I might go and buy one, they're pretty cheap.
