Disk Swap

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

As the title states, I need help swapping disks. I have 3 3TB drives that I'm going to be swapping out for 8TB disks. My issue is that I don't have a parity drive, so I was wondering what is the best way to get the data from the old disks to the new disks, without losing data. I don't have any open slots to just put the disks in, but I do have an external drive dock that I can use for data transfer (although slow).

Please let me know if you need more information.

3x3TB=9TB

2x8TB=16TB plus 1x8TB left for parity

I would take this opportunity to get a parity drive going.

New Config with 8TB parity and 2x3TB data.

Rebuild each data onto new 8TB.

Use Unassigned Devices to copy final 3TB disk to array.

Can't use it as a parity. I have a 10TB in the system. When I add another HBA to the back plane, I'll Add a parity drive. Juse need to know how to swap these.

  1. Put 1st 8TB (let's call it Disk A) in the external enclosure. Connect and mount as Unassigned Device
  2. Cp disk 1 to the mounted unassigned
  3. Replace disk 1 with another 8TB (call it Disk B) in the array
  4. Cp disk 2 and disk 3 to the new Disk 1 i.e. Disk B
  5. Remove disk 2 and disk 3 and replace with Disk A and the remaining 8TB (call Disk C)
  6. Have a beer

Got it, thanks. I assumed this was the best way, but just needed a second opinion.

Base @FredG89 , 3TB > 8TB and 3TBx2 > 8TB

If system have 5 slot, then I will take out all other disks, then new config.

Assign

3TB + 3TB be array disk under same user share --> UD 8TB_1

3TB be cache disk --> UD 8TB_2

Running 2 copy job in parallel, just one take and ~12hrs all will be done.

Then

New config again insert all disks and assign all again ( previous cache disk can be array disk won't have problem )

Cons : Disk config need change, but you may backup the USB first and after the copy job then restore back.

Pros : Most faster, any mistake won't affect other disks, no external enclosure need.
