slow transfer speeds

Featured Replies

so i recently got my server up and running and needed to add a gigE switch to my network. everything was working great i was writing at 27MBs and reading back in the 70MBs area. now all of a sudden its reverted back to getting 11MB reads? seems to be the same if im trying to transfer from my desktop to my htpc so i dont think its a unraid issue? what do i do next? im thinking maybe the switch is defective?

Or the cabling, or the source PC.

The speed is negotiated based on the signals on the cable.

Never overlook you NIC.

I built my unRAID this summer and my MB has a Gig Ethernet port. I assumed it was giving me GigE speeds, but a month into it, I realized it wouln't negotiate GigE for unRAID.  So I enabled the NIC Boot ROM in the BIOS, and started getting GigE speeds.  However, last week my unRAID started reading at Fast Ethernet speeds, but writing at GigE speeds.

I also can no longer manually change any of the NIC settings using ethtool.  Before I could manually change them all.  So I went back to my MB BIOS, which has a self-test for the NIC.  It freezes up the BIOS and you must power cyclce to get it going again (it worked before).  It still seems to work at 100 down/ 1000 up speeds despite freezing the BIOS.  I also disabled the NIC BIOS again, but it didn't revert back to Fast Ethernet and you still couldn't use ethtool to manually change any settings.

So I'm at the point that despite the NIC working somewhat, I think it has just crapped out.  So I have a new Intel Pro on order with a driver that I know is built into unRAID.
