(SOLVED) Question on Share Configuration - Included disks

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have one question on disk shares, their configuration and the relation to Mover.

I understand that I can configure which disk should be used by a given share.

This is all great when it is configured while creating the share, but I would be interested what happens to a share that has data inside and I now want to configure it to only use a certain group of HDD's (or single HDD for that matter).

Lets say "share 1" is currently configured to use all drives (And data of this share is really divided on all of the array disks)

Now when  I configure "share 1" to only use "disk 1", do I understand it correctly that from now on all data will be written to "disk 1" only?

But what is with the data of this share that resides on other drives ? Will Mover transfer this files in between array drives or do I need to do that manually?

As Mover's job is transferring files in between cache and array, I would think that it is not doing the move of data from one array drive to the other - right ?

If I configure the share in question as cache only  (or prefer) and run mover, and than configure it to Cache "Yes" and use Included disks: "disk 1"; Mover should move all files from Cache back to the array and only use "disk 1" right ?

Could anyone please confirm that I understood Mover and Shares correctly or correct me where I am wrong?

Correct, but note the split level overrides that.

Manually, you can also use unbalance.

Correct, though there are plans to improve it.

Cache prefer is needed for moving to cache, rest is correct.

That was a fast one ;)

Thanks to @johnnie.black for helping me understand.

I have to dig into the functions of the various split levels but the rest is clear now.
