The unRaid server will advertise itself on the network by whatever server name you give it on its settings page.

By default, it is named "tower"  but you can name it as you desire.

In the same way, the IP address assigned to the array is shown on the settings page.  You can either assign it yourself and have a fixed IP address, or you can use a DHCP server on your network assign the address.

So, if your media player needs a SAMBA server name, "tower" would be it unless you changed it, it it need an IP address, you would use whatever was assigned and visible on the settings page on the unRaid web-interface.

Thanks Joe for your answer unfortunaly i did all that you said but that does not work, my Tvix don't find my HDD.

Thanks Joe for your answer unfortunately i did all that you said but that does not work, my Tvix don't find my HDD.

I took a look at the manual for your player.

If you are directly connect to the unRaid server with a single cable and no router, hub, or switch, you must use a crossover cable and will need to use static IP addresses since there probably is no DHCP service to assign one.

First, theTvix player must be set to the same subnet as your unRaid server so they can see each other.

To assist me in helping you, please answer the following questions...

On your unRaid server, what is its IP address?

On your unRaid server, what is the "netmask" set to?

On your unRaid server, what is the server name set to?

On your unRaid server, what is the "gateway" set to?

On your Tvix player, what are the settings for TVIX IP?

On your Tvix player, what are the settings for Subnet mask?

On your Tvix player, what are the settings for Gateway?

On your Tvix player, what are the settings for DNS Server?

Basically you want the same netmask, the same gateway on both, you want the unRaid server and TVix IP address to be different only in the last three digits to make them unique on your LAN.

Reading further in the manual, it appears as if your Tvix is looking for a shared folder named tvixhd1 and the manual says to"Create a share with that name and that this is the only available one at the moment" This statement in the manual might indicate that it is the only share name it will search for.  If this is true, then disk1, disk1, etc would never show up on the Tvix.

To check this out, on unRaid, you would need to make a 'user-share' folder with the  tvixhd1 name, and export it as 'read-only' from the unRaid web-page.

So, with your PC, navigate to unRaid disk1, make a folder named  tvixhd1 at the top level of disk1, enable user-shares, or press the re-scan button if you already have them enabled, and then see if the folder is visible on the Tvix.

Good luck... I'm pretty sure it can be made to work somehow.

That was clearly above and beyond the call of duty, Joe.  Nice work.

Are you using a router? or Combination Router/access point?, or a direct connection between the two units?

Looks good so far, except the gateway...    If you are using a router, the router might have an address of 192.168.0.1.  In many case, it would then be your gateway and you would put its address as your gateway.

As it is, on your unRaid router, if you were to type "ping google.com" it would have no way to get the IP address of google.  With the name server populated, it could.    Now, you may not need to have your unRaid server or media player get to the internet today, but you might have the need in the future.  (web-radio-broadcasts, etc)

I use a direct connection between the 2 units. In this case, do i need a gateway (i don't understand this concept) ?

If you have a direct connection between the two units, and you do not have a hub, switch, or router, then leaving the gateway field blank is OK, as there is no gateway to the internet... and no DHCP server.

However if you do not use a hub, router, or switdh between the units...

You do need a special "crossover" cable if you are directly connecting the two units.  A normal LAN cable will not work.

Are you using a "crossover" cable?  If not, that is possibly why the two units can't see each other.

If you accidentally used a standard LAN cable, then they are both transmitting on the same pair, and both receiving on the same pair of wires in the cable. Neither will hear each other since nothing is transmitting on the wires each are listening on.  The  crossover cable is wired so the transmitter on each unit is connected to the receiver on the other, that way they can hear each other... ;D

You can get crossover cables at just about any store that sells computers.

I use a "crossover" cable because i can ping the two units.  ;)

I must try some councils that you gave me.

Thanks.

Hi all,

this is week-end and i can now test my unRAID server. The doubt is to read the file from unRAID server to my Tvix HDD multimedia.

Today i can ping my 2 units, but i can't see my HDD from unRAID server :

- PC for all days : IP 192.168.0.1

- Tvix HDD multimedia : IP 192.168.0.3

You tell me : "Create a shared folder named tvixhd1". I created this folder but how can i share it ?

Thanks

He is referring to enabling user shares.  There are only four screens for Unraid options, you can find it.

It's ok, i can connect my unRAID server to my Tvix 5000U, unfortunately the Samba protocol used is too slow for display video. Is unRAID can manage NFS protocol ?

Interesting...

Because users many have used unRaid with its SAMBA shares to do exactly as you are describing, with multiple streams of data to multiple LAN based players.

I personally have used mine to play 4 different ISO images of DVDs to 4 different players on my LAN while it was re-building a missing disk, and the SAMBA protocol was plenty fast enough.  Others have done so with multiple HD streams...

I have a feeling a lot has to do with the LAN itself... I use a netgear gigabit switch, even though my media players are only 100 Mbit. It made a difference from my ole 100 Meg switch.

What type of media were you attempting to play when you were unsuccessful?

Is this an issue with any server running Samba, or just with unRAID?  Samba is an amazing piece of technology, but very complex.

I must make some test again but it's really strange...

If i read a ISO file the reading of stream is fluid, it's not perfect but very correct. After i want to read a full extracted DVD so i select the IFO file, Oh my God the stream is really jerked !! It's unviewable. Ok now i select a VOB file... It's fluid... so strange... With AVI file it's very jerked. I think that my problem is my stream is not continuous.

My unRAID server is also connect to my PC running on Windows XP, and when i write a file from my PC to my unRAID server the bandwith is not continuous, there are sometimes some micro-disconnection.

This evening i will try to connect my unRAID server directly to my PC on XP.
