Dell PowerEdge R730 Bootproblems

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

i can´t bootup the setup with that specific server. Does anybody has a clue what i have to do, to get it working? Already tried everyhting from iso downloader, to manual install, 2 USB sticks, OS Deployment etc.

Not entirely clear what you have done. Some of the things you mention trying are definitely not the way to install Unraid.

There isn't a "setup". There is only the boot flash. Unraid doesn't "setup" and install itself to any other disk. You just boot from the flash prepared as explained on the DOWNLOAD page linked at the top of this forum.

Please try again with the USB Creator from the DOWNLOAD page, and post back explaining exactly what happens.

Thats exactly the problem. I used the USB Creator, did a USB manually and neither one of them did boot anything

The list of things you mention trying, some of which are irrelevant, don't explain exactly what happened as a result in each case.

Just tell us exactly what happens when you try just this one thing.

In fact nothing happens. Its just telling me theres no bootable device. I removed every other devise inside the network, tried to boot over bios directly to the stick and still no boot device found. BIOS Mode, AHCI enabled instead of Raid etc. all tried

This is your BIOS telling you that. You need to work within your BIOS to get it to boot from the flash drive.

Not sure what the relevance of that is in this context, but you want to be sure your BIOS is using AHCI for all array disks. Unraid IS NOT RAID and you don't want to use any RAID mode when setting up your array.

But that is getting ahead of ourselves.

Can you boot anything other than Unraid from that flash?

I finally got it after literally 6hours of trying...

"You may need to use the HP formatting tool to make your flash drive bootable on your BIOS" this was the key....

Sorry for interrrupting and thanks for the help anyways

Where did you see this, on our forum?

This was an issue several years back where some USB flash devices had a config bit set to "this is a removable device" and others had the bit set to "this is a hard disk".  I think the HP tool was able to flip that bit and solve the problem, which was due to HP bios not allowing boot from a USB flash with the bit set wrong as a security measure (can't remember which state it wants the bit to be).
