July 23, 20196 yr So I want to build some custom cables for my server and can't find the power terminators I want. In the attached image below I have circled in red exactly what I want. Essentially I need IDE 8981 female plugs that allow the power cables to be passed through so that it is easy to daisy chain power plugs on the same cable lines (like SATA almost always has). I just bought a bunch of Norco SS-500 cages and only later realized they use the old power plugs... I need to hook them all up. I also want to use #16 or #14 wire instead of the cheap #18 wire that most power cables use. This pass though style is very common on SATA cables, but difficult to find on IDE power cables. I know they are out there, but I can't find them and really need a part number. Thanks for any help! craigr Edited July 23, 20196 yr by craigr
July 23, 20196 yr Looks promising https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Color-Choosable-molex-8981-Crimp-5_60836935725.html?spm=a2700.7724857.normalList.178.76ee3775Qp44Iu

Unfortunetally the minimum order quantity is 500 pieces... I don't think I need quite that many What exactly were your search words when you found those. I couldn't even get that far. Best, craigr
July 23, 20196 yr Search for 4 pin molex connector, MOQs don't mean much, send them an email with an RFQ for 10 samples and see what they say. They're pretty capitalistic for being communists lol. This looks good too https://m.alibaba.com/product/62181053161/ZPT-Custom-big-4-pin-molex.html?spm=a2706.7843299.1998817009.52.759a71e9ZquQqD They look pinned, tho, thought they were spade capped Edited July 23, 20196 yr by Michael_P
July 24, 20196 yr http://www.frozencpu.com/ Look under Connectors - 4 Pin - Molex Never bought from them and not affiliated, but looks like they have what you are looking for.
July 24, 20196 yr Search term: "Molex Punch Down Power 4 pin"https://www.google.com/search?tbm=shop&psb=1&x=0&y=0&q=molex+punch+down+power+4+pin&oq=molex+punch+down+power+4+pin&aqs=products-cc..
July 29, 20196 yr Author Just for reference I Googled "Molex 4 pin Punch Down Power" and got good hits. I also checked out FrozenCPU and have bought from them in the past. All the connectors I found seem identical, but none have the part number. FrozenCPU calls them "low profile." Here are links for as long as they survive... https://www.ilavmodding.com/product-page/4pin-pass-though-punch-down-connector https://www.frozencpu.com/products/7616/ele-345/Standard_4_Pin_Low_Profile_Easy_Install_Connector_w_Cover_-_Black.html?tl=g51c387s1001#blank https://www.ebay.com/itm/20Pcs-Black-Molex-4-pin-Punch-Down-Power-Plug-Connector-Cover-Standard-IDE-PSU/261963671519?hash=item3cfe4067df:g:JCMAAOSw9N1VoSqn https://www.ebay.com/itm/5-set-Black-Molex-4-pin-Punch-Down-Power-Plug-Connector-with-Single-End-Cover/252305259520?hash=item3abe90bc00:g:1ZUAAOSwFNZW1br8
July 29, 20196 yr Here's a bit of comical history; The "4-pin Molex" we all commonly refer to for IDE power connections is actually an AMP product (now owned by TE-Connectivity) from the "Mate-N-Lock" line (1-480424-0):https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/TE-Connectivity-AMP/1-480424-0 We refer to at as Molex as the legacy 4-pin connector which had a V shape to one side, is a Molex product. The below part appears to be the "punch down" style 4-pin connector in the "Mate-N-Lock" serieshttps://www.mouser.com/datasheet/2/418/NG_CD_794036_C-1259633.pdf This document has more information on that connector and it's associated parts:https://www.te.com/commerce/DocumentDelivery/DDEController?Action=srchrtrv&DocNm=82181_SOFTSHELL_STANDARD_DENSITY&DocType=Catalog+Section&DocLang=English&PartCntxt=794036-1 You are looking for both the Insulation Displacement Connector (IDC) and the Dust Cover for that same connector. They have them available in various colors. Note that the 794036 may not be the connector we actually want here - but this should point you in the correct direction. Page 29 I think is the correct page.
July 30, 20196 yr Author I ordered these lat night and specified 17 pass through covers and 3 end covers: https://www.ebay.com/itm/20Pcs-Black-Molex-4-pin-Punch-Down-Power-Plug-Connector-Cover-Standard-IDE-PSU/261963671519?hash=item3cfe4067df:g:JCMAAOSw9N1VoSqn I'm hoping they can take #16 wire, but I did the calculations and #18 wire will work... but #18 is close to the limit for my current power requirements. craigr

I don't think heating is the limiting factor here, rather voltage sag under load. Either way, keeping the runs as short as possible, and if you really have to have a super long single string, maybe putting a large filter capacitor across the end of the run wouldn't hurt.
