Correct Method of Changing MTU?

I’ve recently been experiencing weird slow response and unresponsive GUI either on the Apps or Docker pages.  At home I have a gigabit network and my VPN provider suggested I lower my MTU to 1450 or something slightly lower than 1500.  

 

Spent quite a bit of time troubleshooting and discovered in the system logs the MTU setting I made on the network was going back and forth - setting eth0 to 1500, then back to 1450 etc.

 

Is there a correct way to set MTU to 1450?  I was using Settings, then Network.  I have 2 connected ports in active failover.
