WD Caviar Black & Samsung 2tb drives question

Featured Replies

I have checked the forums for any issues relating to the following drives prior to installation into my new build.

WD Caviar Black WD2001FASS-00W2B0 2TB

Samsung          HD203WI/R54/34M      2TB

I cannot see anything regarding jumpers on pins etc. can someone just confirm that it is okay to pre-clear these drives without having to put jumpers on any of the pins first?

Thank you

The best way to check on WD drives is to look at the label on the drive.  If the drive is advanced format it will say so.  If it doesn't say the drive is advanced format then you don't need the jumper.  You can do this with any WD drive not just the Blacks.

I don't have any experience with the Samsung drives so can't help you there.

The Samsung HD203 does not require any jumper.

The 204 is not recommended for unRAID use at this time, although some have installed them.

i think only the EARS and a very few EADS use advanced formatting. If I were you i would contact WD just to be sure cause even googling it does not seem to give conclusive info.

Well the WD drive cleared okay and the parity check should be completed in the next few hours. I have seen no issues so far.

Thank you for the replies
