July 30, 20196 yr I have 3 drives currently in the test server. 2) 8TB hard drives and 1) 250GB SSD. Instead of only seeing 3 drives I find a strange 4th drive that is 105MB in size and called ASMT109x-_Config_0123456789 ... Can someone tell me what the heck this is and what should I do with it. Sorry for my ignorance and thanks so much in advance! Edited July 30, 20196 yr by JCristina SP?

The old mother board supports SATA II so I installed a SATA III. Q: How can this unassigned 105MB drive go away, "HIDE" or ... Thanks for taking the time.

July 30, 20196 yr Author I'm trying to NOT format this 105mb "stranger" partition when doing a FORMAT ALL. I was hoping there might be a away to remove this 105MB partition created "we think" by the SATA Controller so it's not always in the way. Thanks again!

July 30, 20196 yr Community Expert Did you assign that device? It shouldn't be assigned, just ignore it.

July 30, 20196 yr Community Expert So just ignore it, format all on array options will only format array or cache devices.
July 30, 20196 yr Author The motherboard I'm using only has SATA II on it so I installed a SATA III card (see photo) and I think it might be the issue. I see the name of the main control chip ASM1062+1093 is similar to the 105MB partition in question: ASMT109X_Config_0123456789

Almost certainly, and those controllers are not recommended since they use SATA port multipliers and usually cause timeout errors with Linux, if you see that on the syslog or Unraid appears to stop responding for a few seconds that's most likely the problem.
July 30, 20196 yr Author I bet that's why I had to preclear 3 times! (error/problems/fail) This time I moved the drives to my motherboard SATA II ports and the one drive precleared without a problem so far as you see in the screenshot. I'll be returning this one unit. Could you recommend an affordable SATA III controller that I could grab from Amazon Prime?
July 30, 20196 yr Community Expert If 2 ports are enough Asmedia based controllers are a good option, unfortunately there aren't good 4 port options, so if more than 2 then go for an 8 port LSI, any LSI with a SAS2008/2308/3008/3408 chipset in IT mode, e.g., 9201-8i, 9211-8i, 9207-8i, 9300-8i, 9400-8i, etc and clones, like the Dell H200/H310 and IBM M1015, these latter ones need to be crossflashed.
July 30, 20196 yr Author Ya. I have 8+ hard drives. So a SAS2008... chipset (LSI) is the way to go then. Will they all " HAVE " to be flashed to IT mode to work properly before using with Unraid?
July 30, 20196 yr Community Expert Don't have to but it's recommended, some models come already in IT mode, also if buying used from ebay some vendors pre-flash them, search for lsi unraid freenas.
July 30, 20196 yr Author Would this LSI do the trick? SAS9211-8I 8PORT Int 6GB Sata+SAS Pcie 2.0 https://www.amazon.com/SAS9211-8I-8PORT-Int-Sata-Pcie/dp/B002RL8I7M/ref=sxbs_sxwds-stvp?keywords=lsi+it+mode&pd_rd_i=B002RL8I7M&pd_rd_r=c990d372-2131-4d09-9503-b4131a185aea&pd_rd_w=aTadU&pd_rd_wg=wMRME&pf_rd_p=a6d018ad-f20b-46c9-8920-433972c7d9b7&pf_rd_r=6SXH2C6ZQRE56VAG2XM8&qid=1564502245&s=gateway
July 30, 20196 yr Author This is the 4th time I precleared this drive and added as a PARITY drive and it still has the RED X next to the drive. Do you have any idea as to what I can do to spin this drive up as a Parity drive.. I'm at a loss. Preclear came back perfect all 3 times. Thanks so much in advance for all your help.x
July 30, 20196 yr In order to get it to be usable (since it's been disabled previously), you have to stop the array, unassign the parity drive, start the array, stop the array, reassign it as parity, and then let it build
July 30, 20196 yr Author THANK YOU!!!!!! OMG... Question: is there a log the show how long it will take to rebuild? There's 0 bytes of data on the array currently.
July 30, 20196 yr Community Expert The time to rebuild parity is nothing to do with the amount of data on the array - it is merely controlled by the size of largest parity drive. It tends to take something like 2-3 hours per TB.
July 30, 20196 yr Author Gotcha! Really appreciate the help. I asked a question about this SATA III Card that I picked up since my motherboard only has 8 SATA II ports and found that the controller created a small unmounted partition as seen in the photo. Can that be removed or does it simply have to be ignored? Also, what are your thoughts on this card (see photo above). Good enough or send back for a LSI 9211-8i or equiv flashed to IT? Thanks again for your thoughts and advise...
