August 1, 20196 yr I know that a NAS drive like a IronWolf drive is best for NAS use but since Unraid works a bit differently shutting down drive that are not being used I guessing standard drives should be ok with parity or multiple parity. What are your thoughts on the really affordable Seagate BarraCuda Internal Hard Drive 8TB SATA 6Gb/s 256MB Cache 3.5-Inch (ST8000DM004) ? thanks all!
August 2, 20196 yr Community Expert They are SMR but lot's of people use them with Unraid, unless you write lots of small fines they should work fine, though they aren't the fastest drives.
August 2, 20196 yr Author I didn’t realize they were SMR. Thanks so much. May be good for low power low heat archival style array that I’m trying to create.
August 3, 20196 yr Author Ended up picking up 3 8TB IronWolf and returning the 8TB SMR's... I was going to just replace the parity drive with an IronWolf but decided to replace all 3... Have a couple of 4TB IronWolf's sitting here so I will drop those in also for a total of 24TB usable. A good start for my needs.
