Using my serial port to access a switch

Featured Replies

So please tell me if I can't do this, but I want to use the serial port on my R320 (UnRAID host) to access a Dell Powerconnect switch. I have used a Dell Tower server with windows 10 on it and putty before to access the switch, but no longer have access to that.

I would like to use my existing hardware but Putty app and a VM with putty on it could not connect to the port over serial 9600 (which is correct to access the switch)

Any help would be so very appreciated!!!

One thing to keep in the back of your mind is the use of a USB-to-Serial converter cable,  These cables are widely available for well under $20US.  Passing USB ports through to VM's and Dockers is quite common and, apparently, works fine.

I would normally use minicom for such a need.  I just checked nerd pack, doesn't seem to be in there... I'd say ask the maintainer to add it.... Makes a lot more sense than a VM.
